After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Hourly Rates for work at Dealer

    Hi

My local Dealer in Northern Brisbane wants to charge me $143.00 per hour for work which I find way too much.

I've just checked with my old dealer in Sydney current rates are $107.00 plus GST.

Whats everones view? Is this price typical of what people are paying.

    cheers

PS Jimmy Mac is now in the loop.

Highway Auto in Brisbane are $110 (including GST as you seem to be quoting ex GST prices for some reason).

I personally don't care what they charge per hour but instead what they charge for the services. Highway Auto charge ~$70 for 5 litres of Castrol 504.00/507.00 oil whereas some dealers charge $150 for 5 litres oil.

So comparing hourly rates is pointless without looking at all the other components of a service.

Thanks but I wasn't asking about the price of a scheduled service or the price of oil, I was asking about the labour price charged in relation to a repair.

Have I made myself clear enough.

The hourly rate is getting beyond a joke as far as I am concerned.
Thats why I go to independants or do it myself(before Mav comes back for a second poke, I am a Qualified Mechanic).
As what was said, Give Jimmy a hit up. What he knows about VAG can't be found on Google!!

It also comes down to the knowledge and experience of the staff. If the staff at a more expensive dealer are more familiar with a problem and can fix it in half the time it's money saved.

Otherwise VW list the time it should take to do many jobs and this is how warranty jobs are charged back but I don't know if they do this for paying jobs.

Seems pretty pointless comparing hourly rates when there are many variables.

IMO $143 is excessive (was that inc or ex gst???) especially for a new dealer and the going rate for dealers seems to be around $110/h.

Ok my 2 cents worth! compare everything not just the hourly cost. Other factors like parts, supply, quality and loads more. Try different places and go back to who you like working on your pride and joy, take it somewhere cheap or expensive as long as the job is done right and your are satisfied then all should be ok. Dealer or back street garage, it depends on who is inside the building, not just the tech but the whole team, the techs cant fix stuff if they dont have the correct info from the staff or customer, the job will never be done first time. Differernt places may be better at different things and different cars, models and ages. some places are better with the old stuff some are better at the new technology than others. The younger techs are into the new stuff, some VW's are older than they are and that technology is no longer used in new models where as the older guys may hate the new computer stuff but will give your carbbie an adjustment and set your points! To end on, you want good helpfull staff with a good mixed bag of techs that can throw around ideas to get the job done what ever it is, from this you will be back on the road and happy, cost isn't the main thing to think of when it comes to your car.................VW............................ ...............

I 110% agree there Pete!!!! when the info is lost at the front counter its all over, the tech who isnt getting paid what he is worth anyway has to deal with mismatched info, which normally doesnt end well and then the front counter tries to smooth the customer over with poor excuses, i know been there done that. for example, car presents with bad starting, the job card will say check for bad starting. Hmm cold or hot, too late customers away and you spend double the time checking it and find the info was all wrong in the 1st place. That is the main problem, second pay the techs what they are worth and the care factor will grow, thats why i gave up on dealerland, and been in many prestigious dealerships on my time , served my apprenticeship in a multi award winning Blue Ribond dealership, however must say things back then were lots different. Spent 10 yrs there and only left to go to Aircraft industry for a break, could have easily stayed, training, knowledge on the floor second to none, sorry to say dont see much of that now, and thats what happens when the pay doesnt reflect and you loose prize staff. In my opinion the if good techs leave their positions will always be filled but with Kia and hyundai techs ( and by no means knocking them!!!!!!!!) only they wont have the cemented fundamental knowledge of these vehicles which IMO you do need to get your head round them at times. Thats when the wheels fall off it for me fill the workshop with techs to work on your pride and joy with around 6mths Vw experience.. Say no more. I feel fortunate to have had Audi, Vw and Porsche where i did my time and to the point where my original service manager who 1st employed me is coming over for a visit when he comes on holiday. Ah well enough of me ranting, i feel you will find most what ive said to be valid.
                    Cheers

Have you ever thought of starting your own Business mate!

                          Could be worth the risk!

People don't mind paying extra generally, if they are getting top quality
workmanship and expertise from someone who's a cut above the rest.

                          Regards
