Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R32 Differences

    Hi All,

I am thinking of buying a used R32 next year. Maybe a 2008 model but I actually prefer the 2006 R32 rims

Anyways, can I ask what are the differences between a 2006,2007,2008 and 2009 R32? I am after a 5 door DSG as wife can't approve for a manual

Reasons for choosing an R32 over the GTI was AWD and the sound of the exhaust

Are there any problems I should look out for? And also what are the service intervals and costs?

    Cheers,
    K.

not trying to sound blunt (and everyone will say the same thing... ), use the search function as there are endless number of threads covering what you are asking...

to start off, if you are wondering what the differences are between the GTI vs .:R32 check this thread:

For stuff about the .:R32, this is also a handy post:

welcome to the forums though and good luck finding a suitable ride! looking forward to seeing some new pics of your ride as well

Actually...he's not after the difference between the GTI & the .:R32.

He wants to know the difference across the years (2006 - 2009) of the .:R32.

      Cue Maverick's intro music

Also...welcome to the forums matey. R32. Only choice is colour. Go for it!

earlier ones only had the half height MFD and zolder wheels.
later models had full height mfd and omaynt wheels.
        (obvious differences)

some subtle changes from memory were things like the cruise control light stays lit on the dash when switched to on regardless whether it is in cruise mode. and esp light stays lit when switched off. (as opposed to in late models, cruise control light only came on when in cruise mode and esp light flashes when switched off)

Thanks guys for the info. So I guess not much of a difference from 2006-2009 R32's

          What is a MFD?

And if I get one without the RNS 510 unit can it be fitted on at a later stage? Or will it cost a bomb to do this through a dealer

          Cheers,
          K.

Mfd is the multi function display. If i were u, id get a car with full height mfd as there are options u can change in it without using vagcom.

U can retrofit a rns, but source it yourself. People here can help u with that.

my ancient 2007 vintage model doesn't even have mp3 cd player! mechanically it's all the same though. I also choose the sound over the tunability of the gti

                Thanks guys for the info.

Can I ask which models onwards have the full height MFD? 2007-2009?

Also should I steer clear of used R32's which are more than 60000kms? Or km's will be irrelevant for this type of car?

                Cheers,
                K.

pretty sure 2008 onwards have the full height MFDs.

if serviced propely, these cars should be ok for a long time.

A question for all R32 owners, do you prefer the look of the MKV R32 or the new up and coming R next year?

Even tho I prefer the v6 sound if I had the cash to throw at a new one I would definitely be waiting. The oem power and torque is awesome 199kw and 350nm 0-100 in 5.5secs? No brainer.

That's an easy one... I prefer the MK5, only because I think it has a nicer rear end than MK6...

I thought the same thing but there would be more lag like with the GTI's, and you'd lose out in changing over. That's not to say I wouldn't get one down the track, just don't think I'd get rid of my .:R early to get one as they may not be that much better (but newer stuff always seems nice). Also invested a bit of time and $$ into mine so don't want to piss it off too soon!

no it's meant to be the same as the Pirelli/S3 engine..
