Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • front bumper grilles gti

does anyone know why mk5 gti's have different front bumper grilles???
i had a gti come into work today with open sections on both bumper grilles although they appear to be blocked off with a plate behind the grille, where as my gti has both grilles fully closed...
prob just a build date thing but i'm curious none the less...
    thanks

Think you're talking about the open fogs? They're available as an oem part from places like dubaddiction.com.au dont think they came standard on any locally delivered golfs

the open fogs were standard on 05 (maybe 06?) model mk5 gti's, but VW then removed it and replaced it with the closed fogs...

they are not the most expensive visual upgrades, i guess it does make it look a little more "aggressive" than closed fogs...

That plate on the right hand side one is included on the ones you purchase from oempl.us etc and it can be removed just like on the ones on the MY05's.

The left one is open when you get it as that has a piece of ducting that fits onto it for the dsg cooler that was standard on the MY05's hence the reason why it had the open fogs.

If you're talking about the stock honeycomb grills down the bottom I believe at least up until the MY07 models the manual had closed vents whereas the DSG had open vents to allow extra cooling for the gearbox. Not sure what happened on the MY08 onwards.
