Pirelli Rosso or Contisport 3's?

I've just purchsed some 19" rims and am now searching for the best tyres for my GTI. I've Contisport 3's on my GTi at the mo but i've been quoted $685 per corner for 225 35 19's and Pirelli Rossos are $100 per corner cheaper.

Has anyone tried either of these on 19's.....also has anyone got any contacts that maybe cheaper in Perth?

Buy from tirerack in the US, heaps cheaper.

Also consider the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrical, comes out on top in the tests with the CSC3 close behind.

Motor did a comparison in the latest issue of the magazine.

1) Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric
2) Dunlop Sport Maxx GT
3) Continental ContiSport Contact 3

Any of these tyres would be the pick.

Definitely +1 the the Goodyear Asymmetrics, voted worldwide as the best wet weather tyre, and theyre a bucket load cheaper than the $685 youve been quoted.

Another great option would be the Bridgestone Adrenalin

What sort of test was undertaken here? Did they drive around for 40,000k's to see which one would last. Not trying to be funny, but in the real world we need tyres that handle well and last too.

I have heard that although the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics are a great trye that they only last 10,000km!

I had a set of Brdgestone Re050,s on my lib that handled great and lasted 40,000ks. Not saying their the best but I'd rather spend more on a tyre and get more wear. I'm not an expert here so feel free to shoot me down in flames!

You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't get a tyre that lasts for ages and grips really well.

I call BS on this, I've got at least 5000 on mine with hard driving and can't even see any wear. The tyre wear rating indicates they will last as long as the CSC3's whcih last longer than the CSC2's.

RE050's aren't in the same league. Tyres don't last forever and I wouldn't want a 3 year old tyre on my car because they go "off" over time. After 8 months tyres loose around 15% of their performance so that's 15% longer braking distances etc. The EVO tyre test ranked the F1 at the top and the CSC3 as the third best. The EVO test is entirely relevant as it was conducted on a GTI.

You'll get 4 17" in the one shipment without having to split across two.

True, but what other information can an 'informed' consumer use when forking out near $2500+ for tyres? What other variables can you test for, up and down driveways with an oil stain, performance across tram-lines, grip levels in an undercover carpark? If you like the RE050's then buy another set.

Motor used dry/wet slalom, dry/wet braking, dry/wet lateral G's and lap times around Oran Park. Would we ever do that, likely not. However, I would have no hesitation in buying any of the tyres in that list.

Previously I had a set of Bridgeston RE070's on my STi which are kind of a road-legal racing tyre. Absolutely great tyre with awesome grip levels (hence they wear easily), awesome steering and cornering feel (rock-solid sidewalls made them noisy), medium to good wet grip, and these were really popular with those that tracked their daily driven cars on weekends etc. I never tracked my car at all, and as you would expect I got far better mileage out of these tyres and if they came in 235/40-18 fitment for the CC, I probably would have no hesitation in picking a set up - the downside, the dealers new they were in demand so had 225/45-17's floating around the $350+ a corner (expensive, considering a set of performance tyres in that fitment was around the $250 mark), 18's weren't availalbe but I bet would've been easily double that price...

In actual fact my car comes with Continental Sport Contact 3's as standard so would I buy a set of Kumho's, Hankooks, Falkens, Yokohama's and any other of the hundreds of brands out there? Although these manufacturers also make great tyres, who's going to do a comparitive between them? If I was up for a set now, I'd be getting a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric's. According to the article they're also cheaper by nearly $100 a corner vs. the Continentals.

No need! Tyres get hammered on every car enthusiast forum and you just simply can't test for the myriad of variables out there which is why there are so many brands, types etc. However, Motor test for a set of premium tyres that are available on the market given the timeframe - that's probably good enough for most of us...

Hmmm...perhaps my lib handles so well with 40k tyres is because of the Torsen awd system?

Agreed. Motor in last years test commented about tyre testing and what a difficult task it was considering the variables. One of the biggest one was the test-vehicle used. You would probably get different results in a FWD, RWD or AWD car, differences in weight etc.

Motor used an Audi S4 so it's probably a long-shot to call it similar but I'm happy with their testing and results as I have an AWD Passat

Thanks for the link. Would've been nice to see EVO use the new Dunlop's. They're testing the 'older' Sport Maxx, however the Sport Maxx TT and the Sport Maxx GT (which is the one in the Motor test) are now levels above the Sport Maxx. I like the Dunlops

I've got the Asymmetrics on my GT-P at the moment and to date theyve done around 18,000kms and still got 30-40% left.

and thats through a RWD with 500hp.

one of the guys on ozaudi got 10k from his on a B7 RS4, but he tracks his every other weekend
