    Hi There,

In the old cars the noise was the alert, now if your car makes noises because of the brake pads, that's really bad sing, you will probably need to rectify or replace the discs, so, noise is not good at all,

Brake pedal distance, not really to be use as signal because the ABS systems in the modern cars automatically ajust the pedal, it doesn't mater if the pad its too thin,

So, from my point of view how to check when you will need to replace them? that will be a day by day inspection of your car, I do it every month or every time that I wash it, while im cleaning the wheels,

Lets see what other guys say,

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers!

You should have an alert pop up on the MFD when they get to the stage that they need replaced.

How many kms do you have roughly on your car?
Is it driven hard, been on any track days etc?

On previous cars I've driven/owned, one of the first signs has been a slight scrubbing noise when braking. You should get some indication of how much you have left on the pads by looking at them physically.

On a MkV - light on the dash gives an early warning. Grindy/graunchy noise means you've gone a bit far.
Otherwise the brakes should be checked every service & reported on.
I like to change at 3mm.

Car doesn't stop when you press the brake pedal? A fairly reliable sign.

at a guess, should brake pads under normal driving conditions last about 80K kms?

You would need to define "normal driving conditions" in great detail for anyone to be able to accurately answer that question.

But, to be helpful, from what I've read, and awful lot of people need to replace their pads well before that. Also VW disks are pretty soft and don't have much meat on them, so often need replacing approx every second set of pads.

If your just looking at pads you can just shine a torch thru wheel spokes and see how close pad backing plate is to disk.
A couple of mm means time to order new pads.
Disk rotors are a bit more difficult to diagnose.
Best method is to measure min thickness with a caliper to size on disk.

Normal service intervals are every 15,000k or 12 months.

So when your dealer sees that the brakes may not last 12 months or 15,000k, he should advise you to keep an eye on them.

37k plus 15k is 52k, well within the range where replacement is needed.

As mentioned by others, check the pad thickness through your wheels and keep an eye on it. If you do get down to backing plate on rotor, you would then need to replace both items. But you may need to replace rotors anyway, they are built to wear out.

im changing mine today from new to 66,000kms not bad with the amount of highway driving and heavy braking that is needed when the highway comes to a complete stop!

Being new to the whole VW experience, i checked the thickness of the front and back pads, and have noticed on my MKV GTI Pirelli that the brake pad wear is not even and rather on a 45 degree angel.... Pretty bizarre when I first saw it......

I obviously inquired and I was informed that its normal and the edges of the brake pad have been manufactured in such a way to eliminate the rotors from screeching....
In addition the callipers hold the brake pad on an angle away from the rotors, thus to further eliminate the rotors from screeching.....
Someone correct me if im wrong????

Saying that, its pretty hard to measure the thickness of the brake pad using a torch through the wheel spokes. ...The thickness that i can see obviously varies from one end to another.....

I assume the MKV GTI and the MKV GTI PIRELLI have the same/identical breaking system????????

I've done 45k and swapped mine last weekend. they had a good 4-5mm left, when with nightly mountain runs and a few track outings. they were making a horrible noise at slow speeds and was told by the mech I had about 5k left. Honestly they had another 15 with some hard driving included.
