  • got a tyre question for mkv golf?

    got my car few months ago (2nd hand)and when i first pick up the front tyres are lummpy and make noise then dealer replace brand new. and now one of the rear got lump on the side wall. the tyres look reasonably new though.
    just wondering if my tyres got lumppy, is it the quality of the tyre or the way that been driven?or is actually due to the car itself, i mean alignment,balance or suspension etc.?
    please post some ideas

    Tyres do go lumpy on the tread causing uneven wear and noises when driving, usually when slowing down the noise gets worse. Many reasons but Im not sure I agree with some of them, I think there are many different reasons depending on different situations, sometimes shockers, alignment and just crappy tyres, road condition etc. But looks like you are saying you have a lump on the sidewall now and not the tread?, if its on the sidewall and you havent damaged the tyre, ie kurbed it! then I think you might be able to put that down to a manufacturing defect so take it back to the dealer or tyre shop to try and get a new one sorted out. Anyone else with their thoughts on uneven tyre wear of the tread causing "wheel bearing" kinda noises?? -VW-

      when i bought my tractor (S/H) it had a very loud "bearing" type noise, that got louder at speed.

      turned out not to be wheel bearings at all.in my case it was severely unevenly warn rear tyres.

      i had all 4 replaced with new ones, and the noise went away.
      i was convinced it was a bearing, but that wasn't the case for me.

      as my suspension seems fine, and the tyres are now wearing evenly, i think it was just that the previous
      owner was from the country, and drove on a lot of unsealed washboard type roads, leading to the wear patterns ?

      on a side wall, a bump is usually the result of a kerbing, or a manufacturing defect.

        Not so long ago Skoda was setting up Octavia IIs (same suspension as Mk V Golfs) with the wrong camber on the rear. This led to excessive wear on the inside edges of the rear tyres and a "serrated" wear pattern on the tread which made a noise very similar to a duff wheel bearing. The solution was to adjust the camber and replace the noisy tyres.

        A lump on the sidewall is usually either damage from a pot hole or similar, OR a manufacturing defect. Seeing as you've had two tyres replaced already, chances are the 3rd one has the same fault. Go back to your dealer and ask them to replace it.

        Just for our info, what brand/model/size tyres were replaced ?

          I got my full set of tyres replaced because of lumps on the sides, not noise notice but after 1 month driving it the lumps where there,

          The dealer told me it was a whole shipment of Contact tyres with fabric deffects, this happened in june last year,

            the tyres was continental 195/65/15 can't remember model. replaced by good year nct5. been 5months all good. just the rear now is nct5 too but was oringinal since i bought the car. may be just the defect tyre. can't hear any noise but will be aware now.

              Its pretty well known that Audi and Vw have had Saw toothing issues. The key is to have regular rotate and balance to minimise the saw toothing , i would suggest 5000k. If it is saw toothing at the rear dont throw them on the front then you will have noise and a bad feel. On the rear they will drum for sure, which sounds very much like a wheel bearing, very common. From day one rotate and it will minimise it but not stop it. Side wall bulge is inner case compromised thus causing a bruise in the side wall, if thats the case not good, no fix replace
