    Hi guys,

For those of you who have the xenon headlights, how do you operate the headlight cleaning? I have read when pressing the window washer every 1st & 5th time it will pop out from underneath the headlights and clean them... i have not seen this in action (had the car on and pressed the washer to test this).

Is this not correct, or is there another way to get this to work?

Every time you manually operate the washer it'll come on.. Otherwise I believe it comes on automatically every now and again when the wipers are doing their normal job....

At least that's what it should do... I've noticed mine coming on every time I manually operate the washer.... Maybe I was just lucky? Maybe it also has a timer? (don't do it more than once a day etc etc?)....

Don't you have to have the headlights on as well as operating the windscreen washers ? (ie no point washing headlights that are currently switched off)

With headlights ON it will wash 1st time you wash windscreen and then every 5th time or as set by VCDS.

          It doesnt happen automatically.

Also check your washer fluid resivoir to ensure that it is full.
Because when it drops to a certain level it will not clean the headlights and will only clean the windscreen...

I dunno what other cars are doing, but mine does it everytime flawlessly from factory. ive never seen this 1st and every 5th business. the washers will never ever work automatically, it is only activated when you flick the stick, otherwise nothing happens.

My car does it every time (I'm pretty sure) and it also definately does it every now and again when the washers are activated. I actually busted it doing it once when I went back inside the house to grab a coke.

Everytime for me with the lights.

On a side note, what sort of product should you put in your washer resevoir?

The official VW windscreen washer additive (from the dealer) is less likely to clog up the very fine washer jets VWs have. I'm not sure, but some people may believe the WURTH product is suitable.

As gregozedobe mentioned the proper VW additive is recommended because it's designed to keep the microjets clear (I found a common one available off the shelf at the auto stores was starting to block them) and in colder climates stops the pipes from freezing.

If the rear jet blocks (or freezes) one of the connections inside the car will burst apart and without you knowing about it water will run down inside trim. VW have a TSB out and if this occurs and you're using the wrong additive you're left with the repair bill.

On the plus side the additive is cheap, it smells good and doesn't damage the paint. Details, part number and pricing below.

x2 on the washer fluid smelling good!! i love it, and so do a lot of my mates who have been in the car.

however, im thinking of deactivating the light washers too, as it dirties up the front of the car when i dont want it to! however, they are quite useful to spray the pesky tail gaters and annoying window washing hobos.

Bars bugs from Shell etc works OK in fine washers too.
