  • Passenger seatbelt warning light

    Hi guys,

I'm having an issue with the seatbelt warning light on the passenger side of my Mk5 Golf GTI (2008 ) 3dr.

The light will go on and beep without any weight on the seat (either a person or bags). There'll be beeps and flashes for about 2 minutes before it gives up.

My car is still under warranty, so I'm sure it would be covered - I just don't want to lose it for half a day on what I'm sure must be a quick fix. Any ideas? At best guess - the system relies on two contact sensors under the seat and any weight will complete the loop...

Has anyone else had this problem, or know of a solution? Otherwise I'll book it in...

Sucks to hear you're having an issue..

A short solution for while you've got the car would be to disconnect the seat? I'm not sure if it can be done but I've read somewhere that it's possible. I've also read that disconnecting and reconnecting the battery can reset some faults but again, I'm not 100% sure. Good luck!

Still in warranty, take back to dealer and dont touch any thing. The Passenger seat has a flat plastic sensor under the seat cover on top of the foam, this can crease causing the wires to touch causing the car to think someone is sat in the seat. (drivers side doesnt have one as if the car is moving hopefully there is someone driving it!! so just the seatbelt plugged in will turn off the drivers side! -VW-

Yes, don't touch a thing. If I am not mistaken the seat sensor and passenger airbag are interconnected. So, it's not something you wanted to fiddle with. Book it in and get it looked at ASAP.
