If people bothered to read their owners manual properly (or even open & skim), we wouldn't even need these threads.
    x2 what he said.

btw, i dont personally use the castrol edge. i've been using Castrol Professional SLX III Longlife which is the VW504.00 spec.

but with the cheap price of castrol edge lately, i may switch to that on my next oil change.

C'mon brad, if you are going to do comparisons a "QA and Fitness for purpose" guy like you knows you should only compare apples with apples, so how much is your Octy dealer going to charge for fitting a new pollen filter (and we all know it won't bear much relationship to the actual time it takes at some places you go to

I agree on considering the total cost of ownership, but in my case I wanted a car I enjoyed driving. If I was only interested in driving cheaply I should have kept my 19 year old laser - bought new, so very little depreciation per year, serviced it myself cheaply, and it was as reliable as an axe. In all that time it never left me stranded on the side of the road once, and in 195,000 Kms I replaced one alternator, one radiator, one waterpump and 1 set of front brake pads (I don't rate consumables like tyres and batteries).

If I was buying newer just on overall cost of ownership I would look at servicing costs for a 1-2 year old cheap asian car (Honda Jazz, or Korean/Tiawanese econoboxes). When I bought my Octy I knew about the servicing costs, and was aware of the need to replace cam belts every 4 years, but I still have no regrets (I chose well for my "fitness for purpose").

        .
That's what I mean, my last service with pollen filter & brake flush was quite reasonably priced.

$75 for the bogan-mobile seemed a bit rich.

And with the propensity of so many VW owners to never open the manual let alone the bonnet to check the oil level or lift a tyre gauge to check the tyres simple is really the best way! If they can't manage the basics how on earth can they figure out which oil to choose with so many choices.
