  • Independent sevicing - Service interval reset & ECU diagnosis??

Can independents performing servicing do the computer related stuff like:
    1. Reset the service internal indicator
    2. Diagnose and correct any faults read from ECU
    3. Update/flash ECU firmware with latest firmware patches

For the 12 month service, whats with VW asking approx. $400 (depending on dealer) for what is basically an oil and filter change (oh, and plugging in a diagnostic tool)? Even independents are asking $270 - $330.

    1. you can do that yourself most likely by reading the owners manual.

    2. Probably but depends on how clever they are and what information they have access to.

    3. Highly unlikely that they would have access to firmware updates. I don't believe they come out very often if at all.

      1. OK, time to RTFM. I flicked through it (just got the car), but not read in depth.
      2. Really asking about European Autotech and TCCA, or any other recommendations in Sydney North Shore. Anyone use City Performance?
      3. OK. Any updates after 2008? I bought a 2008 MY09 GTI

Also, with adjusting things like reverse parking sensor beep loudness, left mirror turning down on reverse, etc. would these be dealer only, or can anyone do these?

        3. That's a Q for VW. If the car has been dealer serviced, any updates will have been done.

VAG-COM can be used to make coding changes.

As Gavin said, that can be done in VCDS (vag-com) but some cheap version bought over ebay will only read and reset codes. Keep it in mind if you buy cheap vag-com.

Control module updates are only carried out as part of campaigns.

If the car is flagged in the system as having an outstanding campaign, requiring an update, then we'll do it. Mind you, you'll have to present the letter VW sends you in the mail regarding the campaign, too.

How do you get the updates? I wouldn't expect the Main Dealer to release them outside the network??

Autologic supply updates (It's not that hard if you think about it).

Any good tuner "may" have the ability to update your car outside the genuine network.

Hmm depends where you go, some of them dont know what they are reading when they plug it in, and more fool them if all they do is the oil and filter when they dont know where you have been with the car or how you drive it. You may have a tyre with a bulge you dont know about, a wheel bearing on the way out, yes even at 12 month, what if the bearing is faulty???? sorry for the rant but ivw got a thing about it. IMO you should roadtest the vehicle first not last as many of them do. This way you get a snapshot of the vehilce, hear noises and feel how it drives, and if there is noises you will then be confident you didnt cause them. Hear a knock or hum then you are on the lookout right away.
                      cheers

                        props to Peter from CVWC.

If that is what I think it is - I trust those good tuners compensate the lucky punter who's car unwittingly gives them this abilty ...or am I way off the mark?

Probably more on the Tuner's ability to manipulate the entire ECU - not just the "engine maps" side of the issue

Fair enough, so not too far off the mark. Main thing, is it is nice to know it can be done outside the genuine network.
