  • Jetta TFSI & Golf GTI V

    Hi All,

I own a 2007 Jetta TFSI. Just wondering what people would say would be the major differences between it and the Golf GTI when it comes to the overall ride, steering & handling?

The Golf GTI has been given such a big wrap by most motoring journalist and my brief drive of one suggested it's definately nice. We bought the Jetta due to that lovely boot space which is ideal with carting around stuff for our 15 month old baby. That said, I do find the steering quite light (just doesn't seem right) and it seems to struggle over anything but the smoothest of roads. The front end also makes noises over the medium type of bumbs or rougher roads. The car's done 44,000kms. I can't imagine the Golf GTI getting the wraps it has if it behaved in the same fashion.

    Thoughts?

PS - On a side note, the traction control doesn't seem to do much. I'm not a fan of TC for the most part, however, being a front wheeler it's probably a decent thing to have. If you tramp it off the line it will just wheel spin and 'axle type' bump until it selects the next gear.

IIRC the TFSI Jetta isn't marketed as a performance car which sucks. I think there is a sports package you can option on which improves handling but I'd say the GTI has more performance components.

Still wish they marketed the TFSI Jetta as the GLI...

I own a GTI, my dad a TFSI. Bear in mind that the TFSI weighs 100kg more than the GTI with what I'm saying.

The GTI has stiffer suspension, it rolls less, and is more fun when it comes to twisties. On the highway it can be a little stiff.

Steering wise there is not much in it, they are running the same tyres. They are as direct as each other and feedback is very similar.

Handling is very similar. Driving both I can easily exceed my limits before the cars.
They do feel like very similar cars and the main difference for me is that the TFSI rolls more in corners than the GTI, and is more comfortable on long trips.

Jumping into the TFSI after driving my car for a while I always find myself going straight for the clutch

Interesting comment about the handling because when I first had the Jetta revo'd I went with a mate to the spur, and no not the black, the other one...
I really pushed the car hard through the twisties imo....Now if the gti is even better than the Jetta, that would just put the gti on another plane all together. Which leads me to think Im gonna have to try one....

Thanks gents - the reviews seem to suggest the GTI is actually more supple. So I'm wondering if the shocks or springs are at a different tension. I know the Jetta has about 3 different rates of shocks, the TFSI being the most firm. But firmer than a GTI?? Hardly makes sense...

The GTI with stock suspension will be better through the "other" spur than the Jetta with stock suspension. I have surprised several cars and a motorcycle rider through there.........was a little late for lunch at Marysville

So are we agreed that the Jetta TFSI is still a capable and fun handler?

ALso do the Jetta rear seats fold down flat completely like the GTI?

I'm not sure how the GTI seats fold down, but the Jetta's seats have a small incline when all the way down.

It actually makes it quite comfortable when lying down
