Der.... It goes without saying that some boot space will be lost when a wider tyre than the space saver piece of crap is put in the well. Are you with us yet? The tyre size on the steelie would be worked out to give the same rolling diameter as the rest of the car's tyres.

The idea of using the steelie is for a cheaper solution than a 7" Mag with 225 tyre on it. The steelie can be put face down like the space saver and it might be possible to cut down the foam so the jack and bits & pieces can fit snugly inside said steelie.

Putting a mag face down would destroy it, so it would have to go face up, and even then other stuff in the boot would tend to scratch it.

The full-size spare mag wheel in my Passat is face down... why should it be an issue with it being face down?

Because there's no dish to a Denver and the tyre doesn't extend past the rim by much.

Perhaps it wouldn't touch, haven't really looked that closely.

The Passat might have a dish in the well so the tyre rests around the edge and the alloy is kept clear?

Not even 15" alloy wheels fits in the place of the space saver without reducing boot space.

. . . but if were on the shoulder of a highway or in a bad location I'd put it on the front until I was about to get somewhere safe and swap it to the rear.

. . . I never used the spare in my last car in 5 years of owning it, have only used my spare once on the GTI in 18 months and only covered around 13km's in 3 trips so I'm not sure I'd bother with it unless I get a get a spare alloy cheap.

Which is a good point. It's really all about risk management. The only time I ever had to change a tyre on the road was 32 years ago when one of my 1962 Falcon's crossplys sprung a leak. Since then I've only had to use a spare in cases where I've had to get a nail out of a tyre.

I think what has saved me is ensuring my tyre pressures are always optimum and even if I got a nail in a tyre, I always caught it in time.

...and old fashioned luck.. This is the first car I have owned with a space saver. My previous cars full size spare had remained untouched in the boot for the 16 years I owned it. I factored this experience in when I saw the Golf has a space saver. Wouldnt you know it - The Golf had a puncture on day two & I got to drive a few hundred kms on the pony tyre..

I must admit that I get a lot less punctures these days - I put it down to much less building activity in my area. Almost all of my on-road punctures have been screws, nails and pop-rivets (mostly new), so I blame slack builders who allow stuff to bounce out of their utes and trucks
