Golf Space saver tyre @ 120km/h

Last Saturday 11.30ish passing Gosford exit freeway was overtaken by an aqua
blueish Golf mk5 TDI with Space saver tyre on the front passenger side.

It was raining and on the back of the Golf was a P plate.
I had slowed to 100km/h due to the rain as I normally do when raining,
always take off 10km/h when raining in all speed zones.

For curiosity sake I increased speed to 110 and still the Golf accelerated
away never to be seen again, I estimate he must have been doing approx 120km/h.

While still shaking my head and approaching the Mooney bridge I was then left for dead
by a black Polo TDI with another p plate which I had passed previously entering from the Gosford exit,
again must have been doing approx 120+

Not to put all P platers in the same boat as these idiots I passed two further on in other makes doing the right thing.

I wouldn't trust a space saver over 80km/h

I swear they are just throwing licenses out to people now.
The amount of people who have no road sense and don't even do basic things like marging, indicating or slowing down for a yellow/red light is amazing and increases more and more every day from what i have seen.

but i thought space saver tyres were not rated for more than 80kmh??
maybe its more of a recommendation tho as they upset the handling of the car due to the different sizing to a regular tyre??

The spacesaver is clearly labeled in huge black letters on a yellow background that you must not exceed 80kph and that tyre MUST be fitted to the rear of the Golf.

Clearly more generation Y rubbish that know it all. Needless to say that they would have sued Volkswagen if they had crashed.



I've lost count of the idiots with P plates getting around in different variants of Mark V golfs and most of them have been zipping in and out of traffic at speed. Why their parents are happy to fork out $30-40,000 for their irresponsible children to thrash is beyond me. There's a few of them on this forum.

One loves doing huge burnouts and than blames the tyre manufacturer for bubbles in the sidewall. Also likes to thrash it within an inch of it's life.

Another crashed his car into a stationary forklift after it rolled backwards 3-4 metres and blamed VW and claimed the DSG was at fault.

I installed the space saver on my front passenger side (to get to Bob Jane's though). I drove especially careful there though because it was a spacesaver!

I wounder how many drivers are aware the space saver should only be fitted to the rear only.
I for one was not aware of that fact, so thanks maverick.
Maybe if I had purchased a golf instead of a Jetta I would be aware from the manual.
Does the space saver itself say it has to be fitted to the rear only or is this just in the manual.

There are plenty of idiots out there, somedays I see P platers going nuts, other days it's fully licensed drivers and P platers are driving too slow. They're just an easy target.

Yeah, you see someone with a red P plate with its little 80kmh sign on it and they go past you at 120+ they do tend to stand out a bit ! And some of the tricks they do in heavy traffic really are asking for trouble.

I just hope when the 'darwin award' principle finally catches up with them they don't take out anyone else in the crash, and that they have no family to mourn them

And just to return back to the original topic, my Octy also has the yellow 80kmh stickers on the spare, but it is an almost proper sized tyre (205/55/16 compared with the 225/40x18 normal tyres). I'd trust it's grip a lot more than the wheelbarrow wheel they give Golf owners, but when I need to use it it will be going on the back axle, not the front.

Hey Rick,

I have to admit I asked myself the same question, then it dawned on me........swap a rear tyre to the front and fit the space saver to the rear. Simple really (albeit a pain).
