How much oil is this machine supposed to be using? I've only done 2700 km and the dipstick showed halfway down last night. Granted, I do kick it a bit now and then... But is this much normal?

How much oil was in it when you picked it up?
The manual covers this as well and tells you how much is considered normal.website: www.my-gti.com

Was full on delivery. The manager of the dealership (who drives the demo R32) said at about 5-6k the oil light should come on. I suspect he was bang on with that, as I was half-way down the dipstick at 2700.... I was also warned when purchasing that this engine would use a little oil, and moreso if I pushed it, as it is a high performance engine. But I never expected to actually see the day when my new engine used that much oil.... it worries me.
EDIT: I checked the manual. I says it can use up to 1.0L/1000km ! I read it over and over - it says that... that's alot if you ask me- and I'm not a mechanic either. But apparently it uses more than usual up to 5000km.2009 R32 - Reflex silver- DSG, Sunroof, RNS-510, Kufatec Bluetooth, Flapper mod

Hey guys similar situation.
I got my brothers Golf GTi last year in August and since then he has had to fill the oil 3 times as the warning light comes on to say it is empty!
Told the service centre they said that this is due to the car being new and the engine is powerful so eats a lot of oil?
Is this true or should I tell them to investigate into it more?
I have the same engine in the EOS and Passat and have never had the Oil light come on in those cars.

AFAIK the R32 3.2 motor does not suffer from oil usage the same as the forced induction GTi's.
I would just keep an eye on the level every week and see if it settles down.
Let us know in a few months time?

And somewhere in the manual I'm sure it says something about regularly checking the level of oil in the engine (ie actually lifting the bonnet and looking at the dip stick, not just waiting for the "low oil" light to come on).
Initially I checked my new Octy every time I filled with fuel, but now I know it doesn't seem to use much (maybe 50-100ml in 5,000Km) I only check every 2nd fill up (ie every 1,000km or so).
As for: "The manager of the dealership (who drives the demo R32) said at about 5-6k the oil light should come on", when the people selling VWs are giving out such bad advice is it any wonder owners don't know any better ? !!!!!
Some VW engines use more oil than others, but if mine used even 500ml per 1,000Km I'd be camping on my dealers doorstop and insisting a fix (AFAIK it is common enough that VWA even have a specified protocol to follow for excessive oil consumption, which includes accurately measured top-ups and distance covered recording).
As an aside, I wonder if an engine that was burning 1 litre of engine oil every 1,000km would fail the official emissions tests (and therefore be unfit for purpose) ?2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

Well, it seems from your comments that my oil usage is probably excessive. I will continue to monitor and report. I have not noticed any oil leaking on the garage floor so I suspect it is obviously getting burned up - no burning oil smell on revving though - quite clean.

A brand new engine can use a little more oil during run in, particularly if your run in is less than ideal - if your still consistently losing oil after a few 1000km I would be talking to the dealer.
FWIW, my R32 with 6500km only shows a very minor (if at all) drop on the dipstick. Service (oil change) is booked for 7500km regardless.Gmk2
