2008 models - what is upgrade, upgrade 2?

Been looking at GTI's. Noticed 2008 cars available have a few variants - MY08 Upgrade, MY08 Upgrade 2 and MY09.

Can someone tell me what these mean? What was in the upgrade/differences between each?

Can you tell each model by the VIN number?
