Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • new gti on its way!!

    Hi All,
I'm a newbie to all these forum things... but couldn't resist when i came across this one...

have placed an order for a 5dr Shadowblue GTI... should be coming in a couple weeks... can hardly wait!

Did anyone actually bother to get all those aftercare extras ie paint protection, etc etc?? And if you did, was it worth it??

    Cheers.

CONGRATS on the purchase... I've also got a new GTi arriving next week

The aftercare extras can be bought at considerably lower prices from aftermarket specialists... if you really want them... dealers love to sell these products, they get great margins; bit like extended guarantees on electronic or white goods.

I got paint protection once, three cars ago... never again. Whilst the product itself wasn't too bad (I didn't keep the car long enough to test durability, but it looked reasonably shiny after a wash), i found that I actually rather enjoy waxing my car (paint protection cars should not be waxed)... And a properly waxed car looks miles better than a washed-only paint protection car.

If you want to protect your new car's paintwork, consider using a sealant (Zaino, Klasse) once a year with a layer or two of wax every time you give it a good wash. Me, I'm going to try using Meguiars NXT wax from the day I get my car, with no sealant.

I'm not hijacking the thread as I believe most new VW buyers will look at threads such as these

This is news to me! I got paint protection thrown in but the salesman knew nothing about it. He certainly didn't tell me not to wax it!

          Tell me more...
          Duration of protection
What detergent to use when washing it
          What IS it?
          How does it work?

The place that did my paint protection told me not to wax it as most waxes have a slight polishing/cleaning/cutting action, and therefore you're likely to slowly / gradually remove the protective coat every time you wax it... There are waxes out there that don't have any cleaning action, but they are hard to find at retail outlets like SuperCheapAuto... if you can find one, such waxes may be ok... even a good wax such as Meguiars Gold Class or NXT have a cleaning action...

I was also told to wash the car with very mild car shampoo, again to prolong the life of the coat. They recommended Meguiars soft gel shampoo (clear bottle with red liquid). Seemed to work well during the period I had the car.

I was told that the paint protection would last 3-5 years, but that I should look to have it replaced after 3 years. Not too sure exactly how they apply the coat.

Just for the sake of clarity, clear coats and aftermarket protective coats are not one and the same thing. Pretty much all cars these days come from the factory with a clear coat on top of the paint (which is OK to wax); the protective coat is another layer on top of that, typically added by the dealer or an aftermarket specialist. The protective coats are sold largely on their UV blocking properties, which I guess is not a bad thing in Australia...
