mk5 golf service schedule (timing belt change in particular)

hey just wondering when the timing belt should be changed on a mk5 golf. my car has done a little under 50k kms and is a late 2005 fsi. from my knowledge it has to be changed at 60k km or 4 years whichever comes first? just did my 60k service (at a recommended vw workshop) but was advised to wait another year because the belt is in good condition (which i'm very uncertain about). appreciate any thoughts on this?

can someone put up a copy of the official service schedule if you can? i don't have my owners manual on me so can't refer there. thanks and appreciate the advice!

AFAIK the timing belt is not due till 120,000k.

If you have any doubts it may be worth contacting VWA and give them your background and ask for the official VWA answer ?

IIRC there have been a number of different durations and distances recommended for timing belt changes over recent years, so it might be worth getting the official answer (and what is in your owners manual might also be out of date ie wrong). Please let us know what you are told (and who said it), as that will add to the corporate knowledge of this forum.

I thought it was 100,00km (60,000miles) or 4 years, whichever is the soonest.

Hi, I hope this may of some assistance to others. I have booked my car for a 60k service, it is 4 years old, purchased brand new from SCC and serviced as per the service schedules. I was told the timing belt would be replaced. Quoted $1150 (parts & labour).

I asked if this included replacing the water pump to which they said no, they would only inspect it. This prompt me to make a few phone calls with other VW workshops.

Barlo- told that they would replace both the timing belt and water pump, the quote given over the phone was the same, the water pump alone was around the $160 mark.

I called Mcgr and was told the timing belt was replaced at the 90k service.

So, this then led me to call VWA . The official view is that the timing belt is replaced at 60,000k or 4 years, whichever comes first.

So, there you have it! the joys of owning a VW.

My old MKIV had to have some water pump work done prior to 60,000kms. I was advised to do the timing belt at the same time as both are very expensive jobs, labour wise, but can be done at the same time with only one big labour charge. The timing belt would have been due at the 60,000km service and it was 4 years old.
For the record, with some other bits'n'pieces it cost ~$1800.
I was shattered.

Well my next service as per my book & new service sticker is 70,000k's or 12 months. I guess they will check it then and see if it needs changing?

On the rear sheet of my service report it has what was completed recently for my 60k service - mostly everything was ticked per the service needed. Although it did mention the toothed belt, as per below.

It states under Additional Requirements @ 105k's

- Toothed belt: renew 48 months
- Toothed belt: renew toothed belt tensioner 48 months
- Toothed belt" renew toothed belt tensioner roller 48 months

R32 has a timing chain from memory. They are supposed to last the life of the car.

In regards to the 4 Cyl engines VW has a habbit of changing their mind on how long one should go before replacement. I would have a chat to my local service dept so they can give you the most recent answer.

For any engine with a belt, new engines that is its 105,000 or 4 years i think. thats what we do cos thats the VW service schedule

just had a serviice done and my car is 4 yrs old, dealer didn;t mention timing belt at all. i asked any parts due to replace and they said nothing!

It is 120,000km as per owner's manual for 2006 Golf. Newer cars may be 150,000km for timing belt. There is not mentioning of how many years tough.
Newer engines fitted with the latest Conti belts could have even longer than 150,000km service life. Always check your owner's manual.

120,000km is from owner's manual for 2006 Golf5. It is 30mm wide belt and on late model engines timing belt materials were greatly improved. I will not change ours before 120,000km. I was actually looking at our owner’s manual after I saw this post, because I recall that I saw the supplement maintenance pages in it where was that timing belt is due at 150,000km. However I can’t find it now.
