  • Backend squeeking..... A Fools Tale...

Had a strange knocking sound coming out of the rear... Thought it was a fault with the KWs...

Only seemed to happen when it was wet... Thought it might have been something wrong with the shocks.......

Started doing it, stopped doing it for a while, then it came back......

I got out of the car and bounced the rear up and down by hand - nothing....

    WTF!

Anyway went to do an oil change today and found a socket set sitting the in rear wheel well (I removed the spare to save weight).... Must have been sitting in there since my last oil change bouncing around.........

    DOH!

Anyway all is nice and quiet now......

I have been running around without a spare for 10 years. It is much better to not have that 20-30kg of weight in car for years than carrying something you never need.

Had need of a flat tyre two times. Both of which would not have been helped by having the real spare tyre.

        1. Tyre flat, fixed it using Tyre Pump can and drove to wheel shop next day no problems.

        2. Hit a steel girder at night that was lying across the road and it smashed both front rims so that they were cut like cans with a can opener. Would have needed two spares to continue. I did continue anyway just drove at 10kph until the rims were worn through and I had made the next town.

I've needed (and used) my spare wheel on my cars about 5 times in the last 15 years, but two of these were when I was on interstate trips, and one was in outback SA (350 Kms from the next place that sold tyres for anything less common than a falcadore or Toyissan).

I can understand some people not carrying around a spare, particularly when you are only driving around town, but it's not for me. I like to be independant, and being able to quickly change to a spare wheel gets me going again and usually saves my rims too.

I have never had two tyres go flat in one go, and I've been driving for over 40 years now, so I think PB's steel girder experience might be pretty rare.

4WD tyres with tubes (on split rims) are a whole different story - I had lots and lots of flats with them (but usage also played a big part in causing that).

I've noticed that driving style makes much more difference to fuel economy than what you are carrying in your car (unless you are carrying something really heavy all the time in hilly terrain), so I'm willing to carry the extra weight of a spare around for the peace of mind it gives me.
