  • Ticking noise from engine bay (mk5 golf 2.0 FSI)

Here is another one for you guys.. any advice/info will be greatly appreciated. I went out for a quick drive around last Sunday and have noticed this ticking noise coming from engine bay area. It lasted for about 5-10 seconds before it faded away and it was consistent regardless of whether the aircon was on - it was always there as I was slowing down and slowly accelerating (up to <2000rpm), and even at idle. The noise was more prominent from inside the car and could not first identify it when I tried to hear it from outside the car.

The car felt like it lost a bit of power too at the time. Standing in front of the engine bay with the engine running, the noise seemed to be coming from left hand side of the engine (facing the car) - I had to literally put my ear next to the left hand side of engine to hear it, which was only faintly heard because of the running engine noise. I could not exactly pinpoint where it was coming from though. It was a very hot day too (34 degrees) if that is any relevant. I have test-driven the car that night when it was much cooler but could not reproduce the noise with and without the aircon on.

Since then I have not noticed the noise again but I feel that the sound of the running engine at idle is a bit louder like when the car is running low on engine oil - maybe the acceleration feels a bit rougher too slightly. My car had a 45k service about a month ago and is 4 years old. Engine oil level is within normal limits but engine coolant level seems to have been lost noticeably if I remember correctly - since it was topped well over the max line at last service. I have not found any obvious leakage yet, other than what was reported at the time of purchase (I will give more details if required) and coolant level is sitting at the same level since that day. I am just worried about the noise that was there that day and probably, slightly rougher acceleration while driving. Before I go on to think about replacing parts that are normally replaced at this km/year interval, I wanted to eliminate other possible causes. Does anyone have any idea what this noise might be? I wanted to do some homework before I go to seek professional help. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi just a stab in the dark but maybe it is the Evap valve, look under the bonnet on the left hand side there will be a black box with a round valve on top, with a pipe coming out of it, its duty cycled for emissions which makes it turn on and off at any time( whilst engine running of course )....

Thanks for that guys. I will go have a look tomorrow. I had the same noise again this afternoon. What does Evap valve do? Is that something that needs a replacement at a certain interval? And just one more question.. what happens if an oil filter wasn't changed when it was due. Would that make any noise like this too? Thanks for the info/advice.
