Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • 1.4 TSI clicking noise under load!!

Guys, I have noticed a very destinctive noise coming from the engine bay.... the only time it happens is when I am cruising around 60km/h then step on the gas to pass or change lanes.... the noise is similar to a stuffed CV when you're hard lock and under power (which is not the case here)
It's just as the charger clutch clicks in and the boost comes in..... to me it sounds like the charger clutch clicking in and out while under load giving the very loud 3 clicks...... it doesn't feel like there is a power loss, but as soon as I hear it I back off then gas it again and it usually won't do it again.
    Has anyone else experienced this??

Oh, and by the way it is very intermittent.... maybe once a week......

Do you happen to notice a plume of unburnt fuel out the back by any chance when this happens? I think you're describing the same thing that happens to me (albeit my engine is the detuned 118 1.4 TSI in the Golf 6). Mine is also intermittent.

Hi CK.... try this link.... it sounds like the loud clicking or rattling (as they state) may actually be the 7DSG.... VW are aware of it.

so its three clicks? not just one when u apply accelerator?
the only thing ive heard like that is the supercharger clutch clicking on. on some cars it gets quite audible, but if ur discribing three clicks i dont really have an idea, unless the charger is being engaged and disengaged a few times? if tahts the case thats not good either.

take it to a VW dealer and get them to plug into it, they do it for free. or they shoudl, if they dont then they are crap and u should go to another dealer. if there is any faults relating to it they'll let u know

              Hi Steve,
The normal click of the supercharger engaging is fine, but this noise is very audible and apparent... especially in the harbour tunnel today, I fed it some gas while changing lanes and there it was..... even my missus looked at me with one of those "WTF was that" looks on her face... it's only showed up in the last month.... i've done 12,500k's now.

I feel bad for the new TSI people... I have not heard of any issues with the GT's and GT sports. I think teh new 7 speed in the mix and the downtuning of the engine power stuffed them up.

I have to agree, seems the new "less expensive to produce" golf is causing a few too many problems across the board. Perhaps it's simply the fact it's so much quieter, that "regular" noises are more obvious?

Still seems there were a lot less "common" problems in the similar GT range.

I think its a case of re-engineering for profit gone wrong.

I think they have probably changed materials or design on a few parts that were expensive to make and now its biting them hard.

Or it could be a few isolated cases. Why not wait to see what VW determine before jumping to conclusions.

I too thought you blokes are a bit quick to write of the World car of the Year as a dud. Words like "I think", "it seems" and "probably" are inherently based on conjecture. Mine is nearly a month old has not missed a beat. Only time will tell the facts.

Well..... no matter how hard I tried, today I could not get it to do it!!! what ever chance I had I buried the right foot to engage the S/C clutch as much as possible to and from work with no issues!!

nah the tsi GT's did/do it too, there just werent as many of them so the problem didnt pop up as often.

but what you'r experiencing definitely sounds different. do you notice a loss in power when it happens? sorry if you mentioned that and i have forgotten already!
is there any sort of hesitation, smoke, vibration or shudder when it happens, or just before or after?

ill ask around at work and see if we've had anything like this before

btw the charger click/squeek issue only usually appears after around 3-4000kms from new
