  • Engine cooling fans: early start

I noticed fans start in 1-2 minutes after I started the engine for the last couple of months. I have temp at min, a/c in off position. Temperature gauge still shows cold and moves to 90deg in the the same manner as before. I doesn't bother me much, but something is not right, has anybody saw similar issue? The car will be serviced in 2,000 km, next month.

In 2 mins it woudl be impossible for coolant to be so hot that thermostat would set off fans.

It may be faulty circuit of some sort?

I would not stress unless the fans are staying on most of the time.

When you get overheating issues your first sign would be the radiator cap sizzling sometimes.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure if mkV still has resistor in the fan to control its speed or it's done electronically. Has anyone attempted to replace coolant temp sensor on the low side of radiator?

The switches in the radiator are just that, they operate at differing water temps. There is a fan speed controller. These sometimes quit. Not worked on a MK5 but on a MK4 the fuse is on the battery box and the controller is close by.
The fuse holders often get melted but that would cause the opposite, no fan.

I suspect this is OK on your car but the switch is operating early.

My dads last jaguar developed this issue. Turned out that the water pumps metal blades had corroded away after 10 years and as the supercharger's watercooler was not functioning properly with this water pump gone the cars main radiator had to compensate for higher engine temps.

It was only diagnosed after I thrashed the car so that water was pissing out the bonnet and I was on the side of the road. Therefore, an obvious watercooling problem existed. Luckily a 4wd gnome happily pulled over and gave me 5L of water hahah.
