Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi guys

5 weeks after getting my Jetta, I'm STILL waiting for a spare key!!!
The HOPELESS dealer claims that VW sent them a Polo key not a Jetta. (I think its another excuse for wasting time)
They then tell me they're sending me a new key from VW and I have to get it programmed at a dealership. I tell them that I'm 85km away from the nearest VW dealership and they need to compensate me for travel and programming labour. Suddenly, they change their tune to say they can do it at their dealership.

Can they program a new key without requiring my car???

    frustrated!!

as far as i am aware, they will need all of your keys and the car in order to program keys.

    Mav will know for sure.

AFAIK only VW dealers can code keys for late model VWs, and if they don't have all keys at the time of coding the "missing" keys won't work properly(immobiliser error).

You purchased this from a car yard I assume secondhand?

If so you can't get the new key programmed there, it has to go to a VW dealer for the car to be connected to the VW mothership.

Don't be surprised if you make the trip to the VW dealer and they can't do it because it's the wrong one the car yard ordered. If they stuffed up one order so far I wouldn't have a lot of faith in them unless VW really did make the mistake on the order but I doubt it.
