Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • CANBUS Location

    Hi All,

Wondering if someone can tell me exactly where the canbus is? And what I'm exactly looking for? Is it a black box?
I've been under the drivers footwell looking for it, I've done a search and some people say its near the throttle, and others say its right up behind the instrument cluster?

I'm trying to find the part number/revision on my 2007 MKV.

I dont have a vagcom cable, I'm wanting to find out the revision to see if I need to update it for the rcd510.

As Jason mentioned in that thread seeing as I have the rcd300 I probably will need to get it upgraded, but I want to double check

    Thanks guys.

This might be a stupid question, but do I need to upgrade the canbus if I was to get an RNS510 instead of an RCD510? Would the RNS still have the battery drain issue with the old gateway?

There are a few large threads but the information is a bit overwhelming and patchy in some spots, I'm hoping someone can clarify this for me.

    Cheers,
    Cam

no need to upgrade the gateway if you go with the RNS510.
only need the upgrade if you go with the RCD510.

for what i spent in total (RCD510 + Gateway + install Fees) i could have bought the RNS510, but im still happy with my decision.

Looks like the problem can occur with the RNS 510 with firmware 2660. Not 100% sure yet.
