  • Modification Roundup and Review

    Hey guys!

I'm a newbie to this forum, and I don't know a great deal about mods, especially with the Jetta that I'm getting!

I figured a thread which would be useful is one where current modders could blog about their successful mods (and failures if any) relating to any aftermarket parts they may have installed. This could be anything from ECU upgrades to rims, seats, headlights you name it, other people wanna hear about it!

Be proud of your mods, and tell us all about em.

Here's a rough template which you could use for your review:

    Car Model:

    Part Type:

    Manufacturer:

Cost Breakdown: (ie. parts, labour, repairs, etc.)

Location: (where you got the part, or where the work was done)

    Benefits/Improvements:

    Disadvantages/Issues experienced:

    Comments/Review:

I don't know what others might think about such a thread but personally I would find it very useful indeed!

So please share your experiences with your mods, and listen to the thoughts of others, and who knows, you might uncover the next golden nugget to make its way under your hood

    Cheers guys!

Run it in hard, get used to it stock, then decide which path you want to head down, power, handling or bling. Until you have the car and drive it, well it's hard to pick what you personally think it needs. Isaw is onto it though...

        Car Model: VW Jetta

Part Type: ECU reflash, APR Stage I tune

        Manufacturer: APR

Cost Breakdown: $1995 + $199 for lockout function

        Location: VW Volks, Melbourne (hopefully)

        (Expected) Benefits/Improvements:

        - Power output from 147Kw to 188Kw
        - Torque from 280 Nm @ 1800rpm - 5000rpm to 410 Nm @ 5000 rpm
        - 5-10% better fuel economy
        - Better launch control, no lag from standing start.

        (Expected) Disadvantages/Issues experienced:

        - Additional boost required of turbo (although from I've heard, additional boost is less than 1 Bar) compared to stock at 11 Bar
        - Insurance issues (going from stock to modified car)
        - Engine reliability (given it's no longer stock)

        Comments/Review:

From all accounts, seems like a good deal, spend about $2k and get 25% more power out of the engine.

My next upgrade will probably be cold air intake and exhaust which would set me back much more (probably $5k) but that's down the track.

iSaw, what are the benefits of the Rear sway bar? Does that affect the balance of the car (ie. no longer 50:50?)

How much would it set me back, and where could i get it in Melb?

check out eurospeed in melbourne buddy.. they do giac and will cost you just under 1k.

And have a look on whiteline's site for the sway bars.

I've got the GIAC tune, EVOMS intake, Milltek turbo back exhaust and VF front mount intercooler...

For starters I'd def recommend the tune and intake..

            Chris,

I've heard alot about GIAC and the really good price.

Just wondering what sort of figures you're getting performance wise.

Does GIAC offer multiple remap modes?

              160 psi of boost!?

Gives the whole car a stronger more rigid chassis essentially, it doesn't effect weight so much as the sway bars aren't too heavy.

Well when it was just tune intake and exhaust, my car put down 164.6kw atw and its trapping around 102mph on the quarter so the power is definitely up there.

GIAC have a flashloader device which is on special but I dont know much about it to be honest, but I'm pretty sure it'll give you the choice of stock, tuned and race gas maps for a little bit extra.

Performance of all the tunes are pretty similar, Ive trialled APR and raced bluefin and all I can say is I definitely dont regret getting GIAC. Bottom line is buddy no tune IMHO is worth 2 grand.

                  Thx Mate,

meant psi =P thanks for the heads up. LOL

Thanks for the feedback Chris... Makes good sense.

I know what you're saying. All the remap does is rejig the coding of the engine, but even still if the gains are worthwhile, then I'd pursue the cost.

Just look at the american websites and their prices and you'll see they're all pretty much the same then check em out locally and ask yourself why the hell is one company charging so much more for the same thing.. Check out golfmkv.com then australian section mate you'll get a lot more honest uncensored feedback from users.

i too have a GIAC flash and enjoy it - intake went BMC, has a nice sound to it..

I've ordered a whiteline rear sway bar (PM me for details)

And now tossing up between a Haldex Gen 2 controller or a Miltek exhaust..

But enjoying a stock car will only let you enjoy your mods later down the track - there a great car from the factory!

Sounds to me like GIAC is a popular alternative to APR! Will definitely do the trial flash to see how it goes! Which is a great feature, btw, rare to get a test before you buy mod for cars =P

Nathan, I'm sure you've already done your research on exhausts but tell me what you think of this

God I could listen to that exhaust note all day!!

Also, could anyone gimme details on Eurospeed in Melbourne? Can't seem to find em on this big wide web.

Also, thanks for all the advice.. Finding it v. useful.

P.S. Enjoying reading the banter in the chip wars thread over at golfMkv.com

Okay ladies and gentlemen, Yes it's that time of year again... no not christmas, but time for a chip war. Now I realise this thread may come as somewhat of a rreeeepost, but I figured there have been enough recent changes in the whole chip debate to warrant a new one. Firstly we no longer have...
