  • want to install fog lights for my mk5 2.0fsi

my golf do not come with fog light and would to get one install. the vw parts people said it would cost 2-3k to do it as it need to rewire the car. and suggest not to do it because not worth it.
then i ask if i get other mechanic to do it and it will be much cheaper, he agrees but warn if the job not do it properly it may cause electrical problems later on. something to do with the harness???
i am not good in cars and can anyone give me some advise?
    thanks

Unless it gets particularly foggy or you require fog lights to illuminate the road due to visibility issues they are illegal now to switch on. Soooooo to save you some hassle, don't bother.

There are many aftermarket kits you can get from TM Tuning or oemplus.com. They require a little effort but IMO it's worth it. Take a look at those sites and I'm sure if you gather all the right equipment, an auto-electrician will be happy to wire them up for you (Don't forget the headlight switch!!)

I would not fit them at all. 99% of the time, you would not be able to use them. (Using them at the same time as your headlights is illegal.)

VW would be correct in saying that installing non-OEM fog lights may cause electrical problems. Read other threads in this forum on problems people have had with wiring things into their cars.

What do you want to achieve?

Do you want more light on the road? In which case fog lights are not the solution and an upgraded bulb like the Osram Nightbreaker probably is. Info and pics on the nightbreaker here and general info on the higher output bulbs here.

Better visibility for your car? Program up DRL's.

They're an easy fit, allow 20 minutes to do all four and to clean your windscreen.

You can do it if you have electrical skills and don't connect them to car bus network. I found and installed $50 driving lights (4 years ago) that look the same as original. I bought them either in BigW or Target (!) and connected them to the battery via a fuse and switch located next to ASR button. You have to buy only VW grills with holes for lights. You will find a plugged hole in car firewall on the driver side and harness can be easily routed there from the battery.
I have to add a relay one day so they can be energised only when headlights are on. I did driving lights for every car I owned. The fog lights are yellow and can be deemed illegal if not used correctly.
