  • Dashboard help?

    Hi guys,

I'm buying a mk5 gti soon, I was just wondering how come there is different dashboard LCD's..sometimes its half the LCD screen and sometimes its full.. does anyone know the reason why?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer..

You mean the display that sits between the Tacho and the Speedo?

IF it is that then it just depends on what model Mk V you have, as I believe it wasn't an option for the early lower Spec Mk V but kept for the GTI and R32.

I think the later models like the Edition got it???? Not sure on that though.

The MFD allows you to play around with some 'settings' via the steering wheel.

Same reason why some gti's have active headrests and some don't. Different model years have different features.

The half height MFD was standard on GTI's and R32's until the end of the MY07 run. The MY08 introduced the full height MFD standard on all GTI, R32 and GT sports.

You could only have the full height MFD with earlier cars if you purchased the FACTORY sat nav, dealer fitted wouldn't give you that option.

You can fit the full height MFD however you're looking at a $1500 exercise.

I tried looking at the options list, but it doesn't have it.. and secondly I was on carsales.com.au MY07 models and some cars have it whilst some cars don't...

Could any GTI owners shed some light?

        Cheers.

Oh I just saw Mavericks Post... thanks for that!

Is there any other features MY08 has over MY07 I should be looking out for? I can't really decide whether to buy the 06,07, or 08 models...

          Thanks guys!

Like Mav said, they are heaps of changes on every 'Edition',

Mine it's an FSI Pacific 08, differences from older models,

            Wheels size,
            Fogs installed,
Large and long format on MFD,
            Auto wipers and lights,

I'm pretty sure there are more,

            Cheers,

I would go for the latest MY that you can afford within reason.

You'll generally get a car that has more good revisions (problems fixed) than bad revisions (features taken away).

Does the top half of the dashboard light up (my07 split screen type) compared to that of the fullscreen my08?

It's called a MFD. The top half is just a bunch of warning lights only (like low fuel, low engine oil level etc.).

Does the track title come up in the middle of the dashboard on the fullscreen version.. or just the track number?

i've read a walkthrough on replacing half with a full MFD, but has anyone else here done it?

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I have a related query about the full size MFD as opposed to the half size... I am trying to figure out what features you miss out on with the half size MFD...

I've done some searching on the forum and whilst it seems clear that the MY08 model GTI introduces the full size MFD and that this is "much better" I can find the specifics of why this is the case..

As some background - I am looking to buy a MKV GTI in the next few months and am starting to gauge prices and expectations based on what is on carsales. Its hard to weigh up a MY07 with a sunroof vs a MY08 without one as I don't know what I'd actually be missing out on with the MY07 in terms of the functionality of the MFD...

I realise the MY08 also introduces MP3 compatibility to the CD Player however this doesn't really phase me as I'd be looking at plugging my MP3 player in somehow. I believe the MY08 might also introduce an AUX IN in the console (the MY09 I drove the other day certainly had this) so that might be another reason to get a MY08 (unless I can find a MY07 with the iPod integration.. does anyone know if that works with an iPhone)?

Ok - that was longer than I meant it to be
