Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Suspension Battle - Rear Strut Brace or Anti-Lift Kit

    howdy all

I have a few hundred thats just dying to jump out of my wallet, and I want some more compliant suspension and flatness a la go kart.

The obvious choices are a RSBar for the loud end or an ALKit for the pointy end.

now if only i could get this poll to work.... if i can't, what would be the people's choice?

You need better reasons than that

More compliant rules out added roll stiffness.

Flatter rules in more roll stiffness.

Do you really know what you "need" ?

what does you Golf do that makes you think it needs changing?

my full list of ideal requirements would be a RSB, ALK and dropped ride height on GTI springs.

Being a TDI i am now worried about fitment and rebound of the GTI springs, but can assume that the lower ride height will help cornering - as a general rule.

I can imagine the ALK keeps the car flatter on accel/decel thereby applying more usable power to the road.

from what i can gather, the RSB keeps the rears down and the car flatter, thereby also allowing power to be used quicker in a corner.

bazzle - I'd like the Golf to be a little lower (for looks and cornering) and then i'd like the Golf to be flatter with reduced body roll and understeer in twisties. Note I don't push the car on the street for fear of accidents so don't need a go kart-like car but would like a little more firmness.

damnit I voted antilift when i meant rear swaybar. Thought you meant strut brace as per title.

I would start with some premium replacement shocks and go one step at a time from there, koni yellow etc.
You can dial in a bit more rebound on the rears to aid turn in and get a better all round vehicle control as well.
            Just my ideas

good input mate - a different angle.

but budget restrictions come into play and i didnt figure on forking out $800+ for a shock kit.

Don't listen to the swaybar people. Unless you have fitted the Whiteline ALK you don't know how much super botox it is for the front end.

My turn in is ridiculously good now and that is from a car that already had KW coilovers.

I did a RSB last night. result is AMAZING! there is a 30km (in a 100 zone mind you..) corner round home which can be taken at about 60-70 normally, had no issues @ 100 last night at all. the car feels more predictable in the back end, has cancelled out a little it of the drift it used to have, and also allows for better turn in. I was hitting every apex last night with ease, honestly best bang for buck suspension mod I've done. if I did it first I think i would of kept stock springs/shocks.

The ALK is next on the list, (after I get the subframe out to put the FSB on...) so cant compare them, but both would be good.

Rear sway bar is THE single best thing you can do to a front wheel drive car. Read a few suspension articles. It's all I've done to my GT and the difference was night and day. FAR flatter, and made the car a lot more fun to drive.

I'm sure the other things will help too, but by as much for as little $$, well I'm voting rear sway. I went same size but solid, Whiteline, and on the hardest setting. Noice.
