  • subframe popping?

anyone here experienced this to date?

got this damn annoying popping / clunking sound when reverse parking the car after a sweeping turn in the underground carpark here.

google tells that the 2 rear subframe bolts have a thin shaft which appear to stretch over time which leads to this god ugly clunking noise.

gonna drop into the stealership tomorrow and book it in and see if they know much about it

will keep this updated once i know more.

Replace with same position bolts from a Passat. Shafts not necked and wont come loose again.

bazzle, I'm wondering if you have experienced this issue yourself?

I have just spoken with the service person here at xxxxxxx in the ACT and he advised that he takes all the bookings and has never heard of this problem before.

dropped in and took the foreman for a test drive long and behold... couldn't replicate the problem

does anyone here have the VW part numbers for the present and replacement bolts?

I can scope out the VW reference number from the US site, but are these a direct 1:1 with the australian part numbers?

The service foreman indicated that I should continue to drive it untill it becomes more paramount and then bring it in to be looked at, this idea seems logical but I'm not quite a fan of their rational thought.

popping sounds probably a CV joint

Sounds to me like a failing constant velocity joint.
Its fairly typical in a failing CV joint that when you crank the wheel over hard and back up you get a clacking popping sound as you are backing. Its the ball bearings beating around in the ball hub.

Have a look to see if the boot is damaged, worn or has grease on the exterior, that will tell you in needs some attention. Surprised the dealer did not pick up on it. If thats the problem I would be looking for a different mechanic.

        Good luck

This might be my issues with a suspension/sway/hard turning noise. when my suspension was taken out and swapped I noticed it a far amount afterwards, and it says they are onetime bolts?

Anyone know where to get a new set for them?
Might look to do the ALK and FSB while I'm under the car...

dude it may be the wheel bolts as they are a one time bolt.. if the took the bolt out for the suspension, they should also know its torque bolt and using a rattle guns isnt enough to tighten it...

this is what happened to my car.. had play in all four wheels when the suspension was changed over.. got VW to replace the wheel bolts... definately work checking.. jack your car up and see if there is play in and out of the guard, if so new bolts from VW.. they are dear, think it was like $40 or something..

                that could be it potentially

wheel bolts? hmmm. is it something that can be swapped by myself or does it need to be on a hoist?
By the sounds of it I'm guessing its the subframe moving around, I've heard it getting worse recently so I'm going to find a torque wrench.

The wheel bolts (the ones that hold the wheel on) are a one time bolt? As in "use them once & throw them away".

                    First I've ever heard that.

                      Umm No.

Wheel bolts are reusable as long as torque and wear requirements are met.
They only get play if left loose.

Wheel bolts are multi use. They are the same as the Mk4 bolts as well.

My 07 Gti goes in on Tuesday for a popping/clunking sound. After a drive with a service guy around the block the other day it seems to be coming from the right rear suspension. It sounds like the jack is loose. Maybe its the subframe thing...stay tuned

                            Same Same

I've got a similar problem with my MY04 MkV (except that it is the left rear). I've only done 44k.

                            My symptoms are
                            • a loud clunk when using the brakes in reverse, but no corresponding noise when going forward
                            • a persistent rattle mostly when travelling over rough ground, which I'm also thinking may be related to the same problem

I took it to the stealership today and was told that the rear brakes needed replacement ($554) - but declined their offer.

From reading a few forums there's a range of solutions which seem to be ...
                            • loose bolts in the suspension (sway bar, shock absorber)
                            • tin carriers for the rear brake pads
                            • perhaps even the rear brakes

Any clues for a solution gratefully received.
