Hello all!
I’m brand new to the forum and guess what – brand new to the world of German precision and engineering – a proud owner of a 3 door Mark V Golf GTI!
This car is no doubt the best car I have ever owned (and I’ve had a few). I’ll do a quick wrap up of the last four cars I’ve owned to give some insight to any that may be considering this wonderful piece of A to B pleasure…..
Eight years ago I went through single-mans ‘need to look good’ syndrome and purchased myself a spanking new Toyota Celica. 100KW of raw underpowered torque steering hairdresser kit – and ‘oh what a feeling’ lasted for about 2 years.
The Celica wasn’t a bad overall package but the lack of acceleration in gear 3, 4 and 5 left one wondering why on earth I just spend 40K on a car that looks the business but simply doesn’t deliver. I guess when I started to see 45+ year old women driving this car around made me think ‘hm…..’
Which lead to the next chapter in my pre GTI days…..
The lions pride (excuse the pun) and joy – the ill fated oil guzzling, piston slapping, Gen3 equipped Holden Commodore SS. (5.7L V8 for the non Aussie hero’s out there)
I selected the automatic four speed slush box in this boat as after test driving the six speed ‘stir the pot’ manual the auto was the more gentlemanly option. Oh man – bored of this car after 1 month. 400+ Nm of torque and 220Kw of power after 3500 revs – usable only at Willowbank. Anyone that’s owned or has ever driven this car knows that around town (0-80k stuff) it’s a bore! And I’m sorry but those after market droning exhaust systems just add to the money already flushed on antiquated pushrod technology. Sorry General but on paper the car seems like something worth considering but that’s where it stops - oh and re-sale – $48K down to $18K in just 4 years – please……
Thinking that my days of ‘fast’ cars where finally out of my system – I decided to purchase a Toyota Camry. Well if that doesn’t take the cake for worlds worst car purchase decision – but I guess having just purchased a new home, new job, new GF, etc.etc. God knows what I was thinking but 0-100 in 9.9 seconds just seemed like the right decision at the time – well that time lasted all of 9 months. (To be honest it probably was one of my better decisions but hey – it’s boring and you only live once right?)
It was around this time that the GF was talking about a new car (another Camry owner) which got me to thinking – in short - my car sux.
The logic…
“I want a car that’s quick”
“I want a car that’s fun”
“I want a car that’s quality”
“I want a car that I’m not going to bet bored with”
Enters the test drive list…..
Mazda 3 MPS
Subaru WRX
Golf GTI
After driving all three within about two weeks of each other the clear winner was the GTI. We’ve all read the reviews – not going to go there but the Brodies notes version is this;
3-MPS – Bullet but….well…don’t really know how to put it in words but just didn’t get there for me.
WRX – To be honest just seemed dated and slow. I know I know, still the ass kicker it’s made out to be but again, behind the wheel – nope – not for me….
GTI – Oh My God - Where do I sign.
So now I’m the proud owner of a MK5 GTI, 3 Door, Red, DSG and Leather. 550K’s on the clock and jumping out of my skin until I’ve done the recommended 1500K before you can fang for real……
Thanks for a great forum and looking forward to more posts from the wonderful world of Volkswagen.
