Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Most expensive DSG repairs...

    Hi guys

I am trying to talk the wife into an extended 3 year VW warranty while that cheap deal with Southern Classic Cars is happening.
My main area of concern is the DSG out of warranty.

Have any of you paid for repairs to your DSG? If so, how much have they been?

    Thanks!

This will give you an idea of a mechatronics replacement along with some ballpark prices of the replacement of the gearbox.

How odd. Wives don't usually need convincing for stuff like insurance (which is what the warranty is). I'd need a 20 page submission for new wheels or a remap but extended factory warranty wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

Just tell her that if you don't get the warranty & something goes wrong then it will have to be paid for out of her fun money.

            Good suggestions!!

Did a google sniff, and quite a bit of talk about high failure rates of the DSG but no definitive numbers....

Looks like the American NHTSA are looking into the DSG as a safety issue??

I was about to buy the extended warranty when the Jetta was written off, I think it is prudent to do so because there are so many high priced components in a VW. One major failure (not necessarily of the DSG) is all it would take to recover the cost of the insurance and as we all know, when you don't have insurance is when you need it most!!

Having said that, I think failure rates on the DSG should be kept in perspective, I suspect as a proportion of the units sold the actual number of failures is probably not that high. As far as the NHTSA looking into the DSG as a safety issue, I find it difficult to believe, but in the lawsuit happy USA, I'd believe anything.

              Cheers

The DSG emphatically does NOT have high failure rates. It's far less a safety issue than the perished wiper blades found on too many cars.

But the extended warranty is an emphatic YES, unless you have too much money. There hasn't been a recent post about the routine aircon failure of Golfs from a few years back, but that's a $4000 item if it fails.

However, some people don't think it's worthwhile - hell, I know one guy who thinks Ambulance insurance is a waste of money....One of my kids broke his arm and needed a trip, it would have cost me $1500 without the then $90 insurance.

I'm not even sure if I have read any failures of DSG on this forum.

It appears to be yet another strange primarily American phenomenon. Every time VW brings out a new technology an American has a near death experience with it. I often wonder how often they have been messing with their cars and screwed something up and then tried to blame VW or just that they are unfamiliar with the technology. DSG failures are extremely rare as far as I can ascertain but their is a LOT of talk about the possibility of failure-which is a different thing.

Funny thing is there is very little report of Audi DSG failure despite using the same transmission.

I thought a number of people on this forum have had new mechatronic control units installed on their DSGs ? I guess it depends on what you define as a "DSG failure" (the devil is in the details, as always)

Wasn't the US safety recall stuff to do with the delay in getting full accleration when taking off from a standstill ? If a Truck is coming towards you and you can't get out of the way in time I guess that situation might feel slightly unsafe.

Edit: ie the situation described in this thread : http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97179

I would not buy a vehicle with DSG and expect to operate it out of warranty. They just don't seem to be very credit card friendly.
