Man, lucky I don't live down south, so much hassle just to transfer rego from one state into another.
I recently purchased a Jetta in Melbourne, drove back to Brisbane.
The whole process can be done without visually inspecting the car to re register the car into my name, just have to provide a RWC, IDs and contract of sale.

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread. but I'm in the same boat with My GT in WA. I got failed as the number wasn't visible and it was dirty.
I don't know what they are expecting, we don't all have hoists at home or endoscope cameras?

Do we have pix as samples somewhere?

Mate on the gt and about 90% of vag engines the number is stamped on the block face at the back. It is near impossible to read with gearbox installed.

Noone doing a blueslip, rego inspection will ever be able to sight the number during an inspection.

I found mine on the drivers side. There is a section of the inner guard that unscrews to show the engine pulley. It is stamped next to the pulley. I would guess that VW would place it in the same place on all their engine variants.

Sorry to necro an old thread but wanted to thank you all. I found my engine today with the help of this thread.
The number is down near the starter motor, facing upwards, underneath a black wiring clip.
We initially found the number standing underneath the vehicle using a mirror. Then got the complete number from up top.
It took a couple of hours to find and hope I never have to find one again 😁 Hope this helps someone.
