Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • RCD510 Head Unit

    Hi Folks

Does anyone know where I can source an RCD510 head unit? I have an MY09 GTI with an RCD500 and I'd like to upgrade.

    Any leads appreciated.

    Thanks
    Gus

Hi Gus, check out ebay in UK, beware of the sellers from Slovania, Czech republic etc since some of them could be fake... but if you can gather good rating from UK sellers, they usually go for around AUD$1000 or sometimes less. Good luck.

Here are a few I've looked at and obviously bidding finished:

    Another one:

    Both from same seller.

i agree completely with the above sentiments.

i got mine from ebay (UK) paid just under 500 pounds shipped.
mine was from a 2009 Passat CC, and was shipped with the manual, and the code card.
arrived in about 10 days, and was in mint condition.

just make sure that you check the feedback ratings of any prospective seller.
it's a good way to get an idea of the sellers trustworthiness.
also, pay with PAYPAL if possible, using your CC.

that way if anything goes wrong, you have two lines of insurance.
one via paypal, and the other from your CC company.

A lot of the head units are made in the Czech Republic so it's not uncommon for most of them to be sent from there. Tomy who sells a lot of RNS 510's is based there.

I just upgraded my Tiguan from a RCD 510 to an RNS 510.

The guy in the service department - mentioned something about CANBUS though - and said that if people had a RCD310 they could literally plug and play the RCD510, but not if they had a "00" series headunit as CANBUS was different?!

That make any sense to those here in the know?

Hmm I'd be interested to know as well DJY.
I'm looking at upgrading my RCD300 to an RCD510, just going off the ebay link posted by aristocrat above, I noticed someone has asked the question

Q: Hi I currently have a rcd300 in my mk 5 2004 golf. Will this rcd510 fit and work fine? Also to connect my ipod classic is there a lead I can get to plug...more
A: Chances are that you will need a CANBUS adaptor to update your CANBUS gateway otherwise the RCD510 will drian your battery. Apart from that, the RCD510 will...more

You might want to read this thread then Cam!

I was searching around the forums...
before I just put up a PRICE CHECK thread for my RCD510 in the classifieds section.

                Thanks

So, according to that thread you only need the CANBUS upgrade if you have an MY05/06 or prior? If thats the case I might be ok, mine is MY07

MY 07 will still probably need the upgraded gateway.

if your car currently has a RCD310 head unit (as opposed to the RCD300)
you might not need the new gateway.

if you have the RCD300 (most likely you do) you will need the upgraded unit.
easiest way to find out is to either scan the gateway with VCDS / VAG-COM or physically look at the unit to see it's part number.

you need part number 1K0 907 530 with the revision L or later.
                  ie: 1K0 907 530 L. the one i bought is 1K0 907 530 S.

                  hope this info helps.
