Just found this thread, I haven't heard it from the outside yet but it's noticeably louder from inside than before the insulation removal. It will never scream due to the rpm cutout but it's definitely noticeable. I have grown used to it and it's not until I drive a hire car etc that I realise how loud it is and how much I like it!

Tinto, you'll have to have a drive by next GTG so I can have a listen. Let's just say that my wife achieves excellent fuel economy

The Z4 3.0 has a sound tube (Ford calls it a 'symposer' in the XR5) - It pipes sound from the intake into the footwells to give you a more aggressive sound - Anyway, blah, blah, you can take the foam baffling out to 'embiggen' the noise. Wonder if it's the same for the TSI?

Most of the whine you can hear from a large supercharger is the belt. Gilmer belts are noisy because of the air escaping between the teeth as they contact the pulleys. The whining noise you can hear is actually the belt teeth 'farting' as the air is squeezed out.

By the way.. I'm not guessing, i actually have experience.

Yes but Gilmer drive is a slightly diff noise than SC whine, trust me I used to drive supercharged cars too

Some cars use a normal serpentine belt without teeth and have simialr noise.
There is a whine from the front gears and from the mating rotors. Actually Mercs have a baffle plate on the outlet to baffle the noise. Some owners remove them.
