  • Differences b/n GTI's

    Hi Guys,

Not far off picking up a 07 or 08 manual gti, just wondering if there are any differences between a MY07 and MY08? I have seen a few 2007 cars listed as MY08.

Also, are there TSI and TFI engines in the 07-08 bracket, if so what is the difference with the 2 donks.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to being an "official" watercooled member.

All GTI's are TFSI models and power wise, are all the same. When a model is a 2007 but is MY08 (like my car), that means it was built in 2007 but has the equipment and options of a 2008 model (which in most cases, there is no difference).

Hope that cleared some things up and I'm sure other members on here will provide more info

Redbook provides a nice side by side comparison between cars... for GTIs, go to the site below, tick the models you want to compare and click on "compare selected"...

Looks like the only diffs between the MY07 and MY08 are MP3 compatibility and Multi-function Control Screen, which lets you change some settings on the car without going to the dealer.

Not sure how accurate it is, but it's pretty useful!

How about half size (early model) and full size (later models) MFD?

          Yeah MP3 and MFD.

You definitley want the full height MFD. It's superior to half height.

I also heard that the MY07 GTIs used timing belts and MY08s had timing chains

Thats for the american gti which started coming with the TSI 2.0L Turbo in 08. Not the aussie GTI which still came with TFSI 2.0L in 08 and 09.

The MY changeover for VWs takes place around mid-year I think. Our GTI was built in late August 06 but is an MY07. Ours must have been an early MY07 as there were some very minor tweaks for subsequent MY07s. Those being differently styled buttons on the steering wheel (all functions the same) and on the 3 door the rubber strip found at the bottom of the fixed rear window was deleted.

Interestingly (to me anyway) my new S3 (which I still don't have, haha) is an MY10 and was built in the second week of the MY changeover. My car was built in week 22 (beginning 31 May) so Audi seems to do their MY changeover quite early.

Only a few more days until my new car is in my hands.

Oh, yeah, biggest thing in favour of the MY08s is the larger MFD in the centre dash display and MP3 compatible CD player. IIRC there should also be an aux in plug in the glove box (or centre console) which our GTI doesn't have.

Ah, well, you can still get stuffed as you have the full size MFD, haha.
