FSI auto common faults & extended warranty worth it?

My wife has a 2006 Golf 2.0 FSI auto that is just run it at 42000Kms so might keep it 5 years. Thinking seriously about getting VW extended warranty (Allianz) which if we sold privately in two years enables the buyer to feel safer with 12mths warranty and hopefully aids selling the car. . We have had quotes around $1350 with RRP of $1650. One dealer wants to know the Drive away price we paid and the Kms it has down, heaven forbid, what has the price we paid got to do with an insurance policy for spare bits and labour? I realise the car can not be more than 100,000Kms and it only covers 60,000kms over 3 years. Has anyone ever claimed on the extended warranty and wish to comment on if they cough up satisfactorily?

What is the likely hood of a fault with these Mk5 Golfs? We have only had a EGR valve go on us in the 3 years from new. Like all insurance it is a gamble and I guess the worst that can go wrong is the electronics, pwr steering,transmission or at worst the engine and possibly the coolant/head gasket leaking, but then they might say wear & tear?

I took my GTI in for investigation with a distinct road noise at slow speeds on the left hand side, it turned out I had two tyre punctures but what was also found was that the left rear wheel bearing failed and required replacement.

I have had my GTI a la year and a half now and I would have thought the wheel bearing could be argued as wear and tear (going over one too many gutters) but no questions asked it was a warranty job and I duly paid for the puncture repairs.

I will definitely be extending my warranty when it's due, hate to have the DSG fail and be replaced!!!

I have a Jetta 2.o FSI auto,and when the warranty expires in November,I will definatly be buying the extended VW warranty...

After finding that the Airconditioning compressor is second rate :

and in our Golf, I will have no alternative to take extended warranty.
I know a mechanic that worked in a VW dealership and he said DSGs brand new have been known to stuff up and so any repairs out of warranty would be frightfully expensive. Also steering racks can be a problem in Golfs. So much so he bought a Honda, mind you he wanted to buy a Jetta but the dealer was too mean to give him a good price. No wonder finding a good dealer is hard when they treat the mechanics like dirt.

Now all I have to do is find the best price in a hurry.

If you can provide a source of these prices I can possible get a better deal but I need to do this by Saturday this week. One dealer where I bought my car reckons the FSI Golf is RRP $1650 and will do it for $1350. Obviously the $1350 is a starting point for negotiating. Anyone with some pointers and advice on the best way to get them down in price would be appreciated.

Sorry Brad I am a Twit, Rushed out of the house and only looked at the first page of the thread but was excited to see these prices. Many thanks for your reply, I owe you a slab of beer, anytime after I sign up. I'll call VWW tomorrow and organise it.

My only query with reading the thread is why and how do Camberwell (close to me and where we bought the Golf) get away with flogging Suncorp and not pushing VW products. Imagine a Macas store flogging Pepsi rather than Coke, They would be whiplashed immediately when found out.
Also some dealers want Rego, Kms, whether bought new etc before they will quote. VW need to smarten these guys up and make them more transparent and consistent. Too much cloak and daggers for my liking.

Anyway we can bypass them all and give the regional dealer support. Money for Jam I bet for VWW. Like a friend sells energy policies if you sign up with a provider, worth around $50 for a bit of paper work and 10mins. The other VW dealers are just a bit greedy. I expect this is a confidential offer not to be quoted elsewhere.

Hope she is around in 2 years to offer a Tiguan cover.

In Australia the retail market is a free one, and VW australia can not compel any dealer to do anything that would be frowned on by the ACCC. No price fixing allowed, no product fixing allowed.

In any free market economy, Buyer Beware applies. Oh, and Macas stores do not sell Coke - they sell a cheap watery syrup that's dark in colour.

It means the buyer should read all information available before rushing out and possibly shooting oneself in the foot..........

However, if getting it wrong means you end up paying a few dollars more it's no real disaster. It's just a bit of money, you don't lose your hand or foot.
