should be a week or so, before i have enough saved to order them.

at current exch rates, it's a great time to be ordering from the US.

          a quick update:

i have just ordered the xenons.
          these ones...

          lights

the ones i got are the xenon low beam with H7 for high beam.
they have an auto levelling feature, but no washer.
i can live with no washer, and its fairly easy to hook up a system to wash the lights should i have to in future.

so they won't be 100% legal without the washers but as close as was possible.
i didn't wanna just stick a HID kit in the halogen housings.

sure they are not cheap, but the exchange rate is great at the moment.

they should arrive in two weeks or so.

          Jason.

Hey guys. I have a 08 Golf TDI Edition, i dont have fog lights. How much better are the fog lights for nightime driving? Id like spotties but i want them within the outline of the body. Just wondering how the fog lights go as ive seen the comercial parts. Would save me making bits and pieces.

                    Don't use fogs.
They are good at creating a lot of light and annoying other drivers.
They throw light about 5m wide of the car and about 10m in front.

Oh and in most (if not all) states & territories they are illegal.

The fog lights are useless for that application and you will end up decreasing your night vision by lighting up the area immediately in front of the car causing your pupils to constrict allowing less light to enter. At night you want your pupils to dilate as much as possible to give you the greatest possible distance vision.

If you want better lighting at night you should upgrade the halogen bulbs for under $50, retrofit bi-xenons for around $5000 or buy a new car with bi-xenon lights fitted.

Adding high performance halogen bulbs to your Volkswagen
Upgrade Golf Headlights to Osram Nightbreaker
Upgrading Volkswagen Halogen Headlights to Osram Super Bright Off Road 65watt bulbs
Retrofitting Xenons (HID) Lighting to reflector housings

If on the other hand you just want to look cool* and annoy other motorists / cause their pupils to constrict than fit fog lights.

*there does seem to be a certain growing percentage of the population that believes that the use of fog lights is cool and provides better visibility because they can see the road directly in front of the car giving the illusion to stupid people that they have made an improvement.

Or genuine retrofit Xenons may be had for just over $1000 US delivered and insured to Aus. That would be your best choice!

Thanks guys. I was really wanting to put a small spot light in its place, but if the fogs did the job then why bother. I will have to look a bit harder. i need them for rural driving to see kangaroos out front and on the side of the road so a decent extra light source would be nice, other road users arent a problem. A nudge bar with 2 spotties on the front would be ace but it looks crap IMO.

Just fit two small lights to one of the number plate holders that you can pick up for under $100 at most auto parts stores, easy to fit just requires the plate to be removed and screw it back on. For the driving you mentioned you will want one of the hella/narva kits that has one pencil beam for distance vision and one spread beam for side of the road.

Yeah theres a few options like that. I really want them to be in the fog light position though. Making up new inserts isnt impossible, just a pain for only one. I have a few months to think about it anyway. But its been on the list for too long.
