  • Which diesel fuel?

    Hi guys

Picking up the Jetta tomorrow , and just want to make sure of the best fuel for it. I'm sure I read somewhere (couldn't find it with search) that BP was the best fuel because it had the highest cetane rating and lowest sulfur content. Is this right?

    cheers!

I've heard many mechanics say that BP Ultimate Diesel is the best.. I can't remember the exact reason for it but from their judgments, I always use it

Better post some pics when you get it!

Yep, BP is the best, but mostly because they have better handling procedures and it's not mixed with other types of diesel. They will have Ultimate Diesel in Sydney in 1-2 months. I used only BP for two years, then got hips of $25 Caltex reward cards and at the end back to BP. Actually my EGR system got faulty while I was on Caltex diesel - look at Diesel/EGR related topics.

This Ultimate brand puzzled me as I thought BP had it for a long time, but guy at BP servo told be last month that they were hoping to get it this August.

Look also at the Fuels and Lubricant section there is a lot of info about diesel and oils.

            ...and enjoy your new car.

Unlike other states (NSW, SA, WA... etc) we don't have access to premium diesel in Victoria through ANY outlet... zilch!

Sigh, why? why? why? Surely, we are deserving customers also.

My BP servo has a little marketing sign on the pump advertising the fact
that BP diesel is recommended by VW.
I believe I also read this in the manual.

even normal BP Diesel has slightly higher CETANE content than others.

man I just put whatever diesel in my car and dont notice a difference

I regularly alternate between Shell, Caltex and BP and haven't noted any major changes

on a recent trip to Brisbane, i was lucky enough to get the opportunity to put a full tank of ultimate diesel from BP in the golf.

while i cant say there was any more power, it was a lot smoother, a little quieter, and a little less soot.
so when it finally gets to sydney, i will be using it all the time.

                      Jason.

The difference between BP normal and ultimate isn't that big a deal in real life, personally I noticed nothing other than the fact it was a little more expensive. Long term, keeping the injectors cleaner seems a good idea, so why not use ultimate if it's available.

More the potential problem is picking up some algae infected diesel at a smaller service station, and once this "bug" gets into your tank it sounds horrendous to get rid of. For that reason alone I'd suggest using the same BP servo as much as possible, and find a popular one that turns over a lot of diesel. Again it's a rare thing to have happen, but everyone seems to know someone it's happened to....and it sure sounds nasty.

In your Grafton shoes, I'd run normal BP from a main road BP servo, and flush the tank every 15k or so with some fuel doctor or similar cleaner from supercheap. Cheap insurance.

I would certainly avoid filling up at an small independent service station. My experience has shown that it does affect the way the engine runs. I use BP primarily but don't have a problem with Caltex. I avoid Shell.

                          Just my opinion.

Traveling through Swansea NSW today past caltex they had Vortex diesel.
Is this just the standard caltex marketing of diesel.or is it new and improved
                            over there standard diesel.

I only fill up with BP.
Second would be Shell than Mobil and I would void Caltex and the rest. Always use Moreys Diesel Engine Smoke Killer.
