My R32 experience

Hi all,

I too am not very happy with my dsg. Had the car for a year now since new and still learning to live with it.

I have had my mechatronic replaced and was good for a week or so.
Was on top of the moon and the usual symptoms all came back.

Issues i am having are the usual,

- erratic/jerky take off.
- feel like its in neutral when turning around corner at low speed and erratically jumps into gear after a slight delay.
- down gearing jolt back from 4-3-2-1 when slowing down.
- thump/thud when going from 5-6 at low speed.
- crashing feeling when placed into D.
- lag between R and D.

The r32 brakes are also very touchy and inconsistent at low speed and can often throw the passenger forward if your not careful. What i mean by inconsistent is that you can press the brake and then another mm or so it will throw you and passenger forward but at some instance it doesn't. To be honest, i really have difficulties breaking smoothly on this car at times.

Been to the dealer heaps of time before and after the replacement.
And the answer is that it is normal dsg behavior and within specs.

There are occasions where the dsg is great and working very smooth but for some reason most of the time its quite rough. One thing i have notice is that most these behavior happens during peak hour traffic when there is heaps of stop/starts traffic (90% of my driving is peak where mfd show an average speed of 20ish km/hr and average consumption is about 13lt/100km).

Some says that i need to learn how to drive the dsg and understand how it work. I have read so many post and applied all methods but just wont work.

To get a smooth start off, basically,

- let go the brake and gently apply gas (and i mean the slightest feather tap consistenly).

If you ask me, i dont think i bought a R32 to drive it that way.

I have also inherited all the common problems like

-cruise control not working
-door locking in working
-rear lights replacements

On the positive note, long trip is a complete different story.

I am in my 3rd month of ownership of this car. I have not experienced any of the problems you mentioned (touch wood).

May I suggest that you take it to an independant mechanic specialising in VAG cars. You may be surprised that they may be able to diagnose the problems better than VW mechanics.

FWIW, the DSG behaviour you mentioned doesn't sound right. And you are right, you didn't buy the car to drive like Miss Daisy.

Others could probably comment more accurately on this but i have noticed this too but in my mums mkV Jetta. Is it a mkV thing? VERY different brakes in that to my MkIV. They seem VERY touchy just as you are describing.

Yes, I find the brakes far too sensitive. I may consider replacing the pads with something less grippier.

I've two .:R and not had any problems with the DSG gearing in either. My 06 model I spent plenty of time sitting in 5mph Motorway crawls up the M4/A404/M40 going to work every day and never was an issue in peak hour where 45min journey would take 4hrs.

Although have to say my latests model have in Aust not really opened her up like my UK one so can't say noticed braking issues as you mention.

However see link for 6 piston caliper upgrade that can recommend.

Can't say on postage costs though, but might still be lot cheaper than buying from suppliers here. Much like coilovers, exhaust etc half the price in UK to Aust.

The brakes are easily the best I've ever had in a car, sure they grab quickly but you adapt to them and I can brake as slow or as fast as I like without any problems at any speed. The brakes will require different pressure under different conditions like any brakes but it's the driver that needs adjusting not the brakes! Do you keep your heel on the floor when you brake?

Yeah, i generally use the heel as the pivot point for brake and gas.

I think the main problem for me is the jolt back and forth from the dsg while slowing down (gearing down) making it difficult to brake smoothly. When gearing down it will lurch back and forward and requires braking to compensate for it. With the sensitive brake, overcompensate for this will throw me and the passenger forward and undercompensate will often need me the brake too immediate.

Basically, my D mode feels like S mode when slowing down at lights to a lesser extent.

I second this. I have the same issue. But I must try the heel on the floor trick and see if that helps.

Sounds like the mechatronic unit use to replace the old one is just as screwed. There is no way it should behave like that.

My R32 had its unit replaced and is a totally different car now.

for those that are having issues with your DSG, what model year are your cars and what year/month built?

I have a 2009 model year car, built in June 08, and i haven't had an issue with my gb yet, after 20000kms.

curious to see if it was the "earlier" cars only.
