Scratched Rims

I visited my dealer today to fix a number of "minor" problems with my 1400km old Golf.

When there i asked about fixing a left front rim which has a light scrape on it and was told that particular rim (its the standard MY09 R32 rim) cannot be fixed and a new one owuld be required.

Has anyone here had any experience with these rims and fixing lights scrapes on them??

What type of rim is it?

I know that there are some places that repair rims, and the end result is amazing. Perhaps do a search or even Google it.. I know certain rims can be done.

Yep you can get it repaired, it's just that VW can't repair it, and would rather charge you an arm for a replacement wheel.

Depending on where you are located, jsut google in "alloy wheel repair" etc

Light scratches are easy, they can even repair chipped or buckled wheels.

All rims can be repaired, depending on what's involved.

In my experience, a light alloy wheel that's a uniform colour (ie: machined alloy and sprayed with a silver colour and then clear coated) is the easiest to repair. Most repairers would (if the scratch is only superficial and not structural), put a bit of bog on, sand it smooth and respray your alloy - job done.

If you're talking about the MY09 R32 rim (Omanyt type), then its a bit more complicated. If the scratch is on the painted surface and not deep, I reckon the above method would work. If the scratch involved the machine surface (bare aluminium which has been clear coated), the best aesthetic result would be to take the rim to an engineering place, stripped of the tyre, get it aluminium welded (ie: build up the scratch) and then turn the surface or mill the surface to original spec, then take the rim to the body shop and get them to re-clear coat the surface.

In any case, if you are prepared to do the leg work, you would save yourself a few quid. I would hazard a guess that a new R32 Omanyt rim would cost close to $800?

Give Lui from Prestige Spectrum a call... 0439430541... he has repaired a few gutter scrapes (not me... the wife) and does a great job. He is mobile so he will come out to your home (Adelaide Metro). Depending on the work required, it should be areound $120 a wheel. Good luck!

I used a similar guy in Brisbane to repair gutter rash on a front rim - excellent job - $100 cash. Can't tell it's been repaired.

Yes i went past solitaire and they got Lui to have a look at it, Solitaire then advised me that he couldn't do it, tried to slug me $947 for a new rim. Called Lui, great guy, having a look this weekend.
