  • Launch Control Issue

Has anyone else had a problem with their launch control system on MK5 Golfs?

I know the Pirelli edition GTI comes with it as does the R32, not sure about standard GTI as never driven one.

The problem i am having is that sometimes the car wont actually engage launch control as it is supposed to. I still go through the same sequence but it tends to have a mind of its own as to whether it will enter the launch control mode.

Are you following the instructions as per the manual? Also in the manual are the conditions under which LC will operate.

If the brake isn't depressed enough LC will not operate.

If the gearbox isn't warm enough LC will not operate.

If the gearbox fluid is too hot LC will not operate.

And a heap of other obscure little ones designed to protect the gearbox.

And yes it's on the GTI.

Yes i only try to engage it when the temps are up. Maybe i'm not depressing the brake enough. Will give it a go.

Thanks for the tips, i suppose it pays to consult the manual.

Just fully press the brake pedal down and use your right foot to feather your desired RPM launch and let go of your left foot when light is green (or when you want to launch) and you should be pretty sweet. As Maverick said the only problem if LC is not working properly is gearbox and oil temperatures

          esp off.. dont forget.

The way i do it is by firstly warming up the engine, brake at max, esp off, s-mode, rev, and let the brake off, then *boom*

I'd assume your not braking hard enough. I had the same issue while out at the drags a few weeks ago.

Yes following the process to the letter the only issue may be oil temps and not pressing the brake hard enough to begin with.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated.

as long as your temp is over 1/4 it'll work. I wait till its at operating temp tho.

...and modulate the throttle a LOT when you let the brake go.
Otherwise you'll just sit & spin.

It isn't like what I'd imagined, where you just floor it and let the car do the rest. Once that brake is up, the traction control is in your hands.

Yes. My experience too. So how is this 'launch control'? Seems to me its just a case of good old fashioned baggen em up, in a front wheel drive car........

If you launch correctly tests have shown up to .7 seconds off the 0-100 time.

I've used LC a couple of times..

seems pretty pointless in the real world, as it doesn't launch as soon as you let go of the brakes.. i really dislike the lag, seems like a long wait

I prefer the 'launch control' on my manual car, although at times my left & right legs don't always talk to each other in perfect harmony

how much faster would be it be if they started timing from the time your left foot stop stopped braking?

Doesn't take too much effort to work out when the lights are going to change (especially if at the track) and the delay is pretty small given the benefits it offers.
