Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    I thought I would share my towbar story as it may benefit others. Having called the dealer and being quoted $1,800 to fit a towbar to an MKV GTI I started looking for cheaper alternatives. The actual bar was cheap enough. I chose the Hayman Reece for $450 fitted. It is a tongue type, not a square tube and I asked the installer to put a rubber grommet around the cutout in the bumper. I don't mind how it looks.

    The wiring was much trickier and I finally resolved it as follows.

    This allows you to tap into the tailight wiring while drawing power from the cigarette lighter in the hatch. You only need to tap three wires, left turn, right turn and tail/stop. The tail/stop sends different voltage (3v or 12v) to light brake lights versus running lights. You obviously need to use a multimeter to figure all this out. Pulling the trim out from just behing the taillights is scary but doable, no different to changing a globe.

    The problem is that the output from the above unit is US style where the stop lights are the indicators as well. So you need to also buy -

    This takes the US signal and converts it to Australian. ie it takes stop/left and stop/right and converts it to stop, left and right.

    As a result I have my trailer wiring working correctly, including running lights for night driving.

    Total cost of towbar was $450 for the bar plus $180 for the wiring equals $630. Much better than the $1,800 the dealer quoted. So I went and bought a trailer and still had plenty of change!

    Note that I actually bought modulite model 119191, however it now seems to be discontinued as its extra features have been added to model 119190. I checked the instructions for 119190 and they are identicle to mine and describe the single brake light running light scenario that the Golf has so I am sure it will work.

    Nice work, mate.

    The reason the dealer quoted you so high on the genuine gear is that the wiring for the MKV is LHD-only, requiring it to be extened to reach both sides of the car at both ends of the dash, on top the fact that a fair amount of the interior needs to be removed. While it's a fairly seemless install, I never look forward to doing them.

      Interesting. Why don't you give us a it more detail of what's involved? What do you mean by . .

        Ugh, do I have to?

        Basically, the wiring harness splits in two from the left rear corner of the car, to go to the fuse box at each end of the dash. The section of the harness that goes down the right side of the car wont reach on a RHD, so it has to be extended by half a meter or so.

        I haven't fitted one in 18 months or so, but I'm thinking it could be avoided by fitting the control module in the right rear corner, so in theory, the lengths would be correct.

        This is no longer the case on the MKVI, as there is now a RHD-specific harness. I haven't yet looked into whether this will work in a MKV. Maybe I'll bust out the circuit diagrams tomorrow and have a look.

                would doing something like this be equivalent to the can-bus controls that VW uses? ie. are there any issues with electronic stability, rear parking sensors etc?

                    Hi Guys,

                    The factory trailer control module fitted with the factory towbar integrates the trailer into the vehicle system. E.g. If you have Park assist it will show the trailer on the RCD510/RNS510 when connected and will automatically deactivate the rear sensors, it lowers the headlights (Xenons) when a trailer is fitted to compensate, lets the ABS control unit know a trailer is fitted and will thus alter the characteristics of the ABS/ESP and also monitors the light circuit of the trailer. Also if towing a caravan an auxiliary power supply can be supplied to the trailer.

                      I got a qoute of $2000 to install the towbar on mine. I ended up buying the factory towbar and wiring from vw for $1000. I installed the smart box on the "rear right" side of the car to allow the wires to extend to the dash without them being extended. It is true that the wiring kit is made for LHdrive cars and the only difference being that the smart box comes with a bracket to be mounted on in the left hand rear of the car and then the wiring routed down the lhs of the vehicle to the front lhs dash (on a lsdrive vehicle). All I did was not use the bracket and mounted the smart box in the rhs rear and routed the cables down the rhs of the car ending at the rhs dash under the steering wheel.

                      It was a bit of a prick to do seeeing as it was my first time. It'd be much easier now that I've done it before.
                      BTW the wires are connected to the main connector under the steering wheel and then the ecu needs to be reprogrammed as well.

                            I'm pretty sure it's due to the exhaust outlets being in a bad spot.
