  • aux heater question

    Hi all.

im wondering who has the aux heater fitted to their cars ?

i had the can gateway replaced with the newest version a few days ago.
as part of the process, i was given a print out of the codes and installed items list.
i noticed that one of the items is "AUX Heater installed"

im sure it was not there before the new gateway went in.
but here's the best part !

now when i leave work (at 10:30 at night in 6 deg temps) i get warm air within about 30 seconds, and nicely toasty
within about 2 minutes of starting the car.

never did that before..... previously, i would be half way home before getting even warm air.
my work commute is 17km each way.

so my question is, is the aux heater a common item on the mk5, and why would it be installed, but not coded to be active ?

either way, i love it. god send in winter.

    Jason.

It's a ceramic PET heater of around 1kW fitted behind the center vent. Only 05's got it, 06's onwards didn't in AU. It was only coded active in Canada and EU. You see people talking about it a lot on the USA TDIclub forums.

Basically, if the climatic (non dual zone) is turned to max temp (apparently you can feel a click), or climatronic (dual zone) has a heating call and the econ button not active then the electric heater can operate for a bit to warm up the air. It's not super hot but is helpful for defogging the windscreen.

Unfortunatley my 07TDI doesn't have it

(Note that if you have the ceramic PET heater, you also have an uprated alternator, 170A versus the normal 140A. 1kW heater at 14ish volts is around 70A.)

      sweet.
lucky me, i have an 05 then, huh ?

im getting warm air in about 30 seconds, and very warm in under 2 mins.
not as hot as full engine heat, but certainly very very warm.

        Hi Jason,
I have a 2005 Golf Sportline. How do I switch on the "Aux Heater" ?

The heater only started working after I had the gateway changed.

I dunno if your car will have the heater,or if it will work but to use it just turn the heater on high
          & turn the fan on.

It will start producing heat fairly quickly (1 minute or less) if it's working.
note that it will not get as hot as the full engine heat, but it deff does produce immediate warmth.

          Jason.

Golf6 has the option of an Auxiliary Heating (FFB) aerial in the roof aerial. Any idea how this would be used by the system?

Yes, EU and Canada had an option of a diesel fired water heater with a remote control.

The remote range was around 1Km.

The heater (google Eiberspacher or Webasto) burned diesel (maybe petrol option too) to heat the engine water to warm up the engine. It could also turn on the interior fan to warm up the interior. It could be activated by schedule (configured in the highline MFD), remote (a seperate keyfob to the door) or by a button which in the MK5 was in the centre of the fan speed control. You either have DUAL (to switch dual zone on or off) or a little bar with wavy lines that was for the aux heater.

That system has it's on canbus controller, unlike the electric heater which is run from the C&C or CE controller, cannot remember which.

Unfortunatley in the literature, they are both called "aux heater"

Cars in cold areas in Canada & USA can be fitted with engine block heaters. Run off mains electricity to make sure the engine oil is nice and warm prior to start up.

Yes but that one is not remote controlled.

                  They come in two forms.

                  1) A magnetic or adhesive pad that stuck onto the bottom of the sump (our sumps are alu so I'm not sure magnetic would work). These were a bit notorious for falling off onto the plastic underbody shroud and setting it on fire. Sort of like an electric blanket for your sump

                  2) A genuine VW or an aftermarket electric element inserted in the water pipes. The VW one relied on convection for cirulation and was rated at about 600 watts. Aftermarket ones can also include a pump for more efficient heating. Google 'frostheater' for a quality aftermarket one although I'm not sure they make them for our market (240V)

there are a few "Block heaters" that are 240 v but most are 110/120v
