  • Key won't come out of ignition

    Hey guys.
As per title, the key refuses to come out of the ignition. I can drive and turn the engine on but when I turn the engine off the key won't come out. Anyone know how I could fix this problem and what the problem may be?

Also has anyone had the same exp in their car?

At the risk of stating the obvious (and forgive me if you already have tried this) it needs to be in park if it's an auto? If that doesn't work the electronics that sense that from the gearbox to the ignition slot may be faulty.

Yeah I had this problem when my car had a foot of water in it. It randomly gave me my key back at some point... I couldn't figure out how to get it out.

Yeah I've done all the obvious things like check the steering wheel wasn't locked, made sure it's in P etc. I'm out of ideas which is why I'm posting. It worked in the morning. Went to the bank, took key out, everything was sweet. Came back from bank, drove home and it won't come out. I didn't do anything . I just did what I normally do and it's playing up on me

ive also put the car in the ON position (engine NOT on, just the car and the electrics), pressed the brake pedal whilst changing the gearstick from P to S back upto P a few times and it still wont come out

I just came back from the dealer and dropped it off. need to leave it over night. Starting to really dislike VW...

I think the most likely thing is the sensor for the gearbox which is not sending the park signal to the ECU and the key barrel to release the key, but that's just my previous experience with my Lexus.

I say collapsed ignition barrel, but let's see what VW 'diagnose'?

Hi, the same problem happens to me a few months ago. One morning get to work and key is really hard to remove. Get home that night and no matter what I try I can't get the key out. Try turing on and off, moving in and out of park, foot on brake etc etc...End up calling VW assist, but while waiting for them to come they key comes out! Next morning get to work and again, key wont budge. Luckily my dealer is just around the corner so I drop the car off to them to check out. They said they couldn't find a problem and couldn't replicate it either!

It hasn't happened since then, so I don't know if they lubricated the key and barrel or did actually dosomething. The only other thing I can think of is that at the time, I was using the manual mode a lot (TDI DSG), and I haven't actually used manual mode since then?

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone! I think there was another threat on here somewhere about this too.

                  cheers
