  • clack clack clack - GTI climate control

    hey guys
i'm new to the forum and new to golfs, sold my turbo falcon and got a
MkV GTI.... after years of falcons its hard to get used to the front drive, totally different cornering strategy..but its so much fun, i cant stop smiling.

I have one irritating problem with the A/C that im hoping to get help with...apparently the climate control solenoids behind the centre console are prone to making 'clackin' noises which is makin me twitchy. The dealer showed me a TSB, bottom line they wont fix it.

i want to take a look but need to get in behind the console ahead of the gear stick... dont know how to get the the plastic panels off without breaking things

Has anyone had this problem fixed or know how or who can fix it?

    thanks for reading

PS My kid reckons just turn the music up and the noise will magically go away

my car has done that from brand new. Only seems to be during the first few moments of operation. Never really thought much of it though as I usually have music playing which drowns it out

You can just pop the gearstick boot up with your hands, it just squeezes in.

They undo the bolts, they are T20 fitting from memory, and pull up the ashtray/buttons section. It's a snap.

But I don't know what you will see from that angle.

IF you wanna go top down just pop out the top piece of the ari conditioning vent and keep un screwing. Removing the air vents is the hardest part. You gotta pry them up vertically from the front.

Anyway wanna chime in with the ELSAWIN diagram?

Have the same issue when it trys to move vents,

would love to see the TSB for the fix and try to get VW to look after it on warranty.

same in mine. I put it on a list of warranty stuff the other day...it got very little interest from the dealer - they didn't fix it.

My '06 Sportline does exactly the same...the noises scared me initially but I figured it was exactly as you reported...solenoids working overtime managing the Climate Control. Agree...annoying...but whether its fixable is another thing altogether!

Has anyone managed to get this fixed under warranty?

I just bought a second hand 2006 GTI and it has the exact same problem. I was going to take it in to VW before the warranty expires next month to see if they'll fix it.

Not a killer, but certainly quite annoying as you're cruising along and you hear a clack clack clack noise coming from the dash. Perhaps I don't turn my stereo up high enough =)

Why the heck won't they fix it if it is a known issue?!!

Because it isn't a problem. It's normal operation.

If you don't like it put some sound deadening in that area to muffle the noise or harden up.

And I thought I had rats in my dash

Fuel pump in R32 also makes some strange noises similar.

I don't have that issue thankfully.
But I would not call a design issue..normal operation!

I just noticed this sound last week, glad to hear it's nothing serious.

Noticed this in our GT TDI as well...so...no joy from the dealer in getting it fixed, eh? That's pretty poor

Hi guys, just to spread a little light on this subject,
Here in the UK i have changed many Air recirculation flap motors for this fault.
Basically the motor has set positions which the A/C panel remembers,it can then determine where the position of the flap is.These values are stored,if a flat battery / jump spike has occurred the sometimes these values are lost. They can be reprogrammed by 5052 guided fault finding, but more often they show a fault ( V154 tolerance exceeded ) or ( upper limit/lower limit exceeded ). so the noise you can here is the motor trying to turn when it is already at it stop.As for getting it fixed? all depends on whose looking at it.
If the motor can not be re calibrated then it should be replaced warranty if you have it.
hope this helps in any way
