Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk5 1.6L only runs on 98RON!?!?!

I was talking with a friend who has a mk5 Golf with the standard atmo 1.6L and he told he that when he bought the car the dealer said you can only run this car on premium 98 Ron unleaded. Is this true? I didn't think that the 1.6 was in such a high state of tune to warrant such an expensive fuel.

Anyone out there running standard unleaded without problems.

I think it might be 95 but yeah it's premium.

The Golf V Specifications that were previously on the VWA site said 95RON for the 1.6 and 98RON for the other petrol engines. Anyway, it will be listed inside the filler flap on the car.

Is the friend capable of reading their owners manual conveniently located in the glovebox or even of reading the inside of the fuel filler cap Because if he did he would see that VW recommend 95 RON fuel.

Is 10c a litre really that much more expensive? The car uses 7.5l litres/100km so assume 15,000km pa this is 1125 litres. Additional cost each year to use 95 or 98 RON fuel $112.50 plus it can lower your fuel consumption and keeps the fuel system clean.

Higher RON only means the fuel will not detonate at lower compression rates. The 1.6 has a relatively high compression compared with say a Corolla, but a heavier car to pull around. It needs all the help it can get (which explains why it has been replaced in the MK6 with a turbo...).

lol..my mighty beast is a 2000 1.6 atmo car and I usually use PULP but it seems to run fine on regular unleaded as well.

The Corolla's 1.8 has made 100kw for years, the Golf 1.6 made what? 74kw iiirc?

75kw and 148nm. Compression is 10.5:1. There was a 1.6 FSI from memory in Europe, I wonder what sort of power that made? The 2.0 FSI puts out 110kw and 200nm so it couldn't have been a big increase.

I found that my old mkIV 1.6 was a lot happier with 98RON.
                    95RON was the recommended minimum.

You can run the car on slurry standard unleaded, but it clogs up the fuel system and will crack the exhaust manifold etc. And it will run like a slow old pig.

It costs the same to run the car on premium as the engine runs better and doesnt labour as much. I reckon you spend another $2 at the pump and go 50ks further.

In Germany you can still get the Golf VI with the 1.6 (75 kW) and on their website it says you can use premium unleaded OR regular unleaded, but in the fine print it says that using regular may result in performance and fuel consumption penalties [yep, you can actually buy regular unleaded (91 RON) in Germany].

However German petrol is very clean, as all grades of petrol have a limit of 10 ppm for sulfur, but in Australia regular is allowed to have as much as 150 ppm of sulfur, while premium has a limit of 50 ppm of sulfur. And for that reason alone your friend should always use premium (95 RON) or super premium (98 RON).

One of my workmates borrowed her daughters NA MK5 for a month and filled it with ULP all the time she had it. Her daughter thought there was something wrong when she returned from overseas and took it to the dealers for diagnosis - it only cost her $100 for them to tell her it had incorrect fuel in it

They should cancel the drivers license of people that are too stupid to RTFM or read the inside of the fuel flap. Why would you fill a car up with fuel not knowing what fuel was required, you may as well put diesel in it.

I can see in years to come drivers will be so stupid they will create nozzles out of different shapes to prevent these problems. If the parents can't fit the correct nozzle at least they can get their two year old out to do it for them
