Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • repairs to jetta

had my jetta in at the dealership yesterday for some warranty work.
    - cruise control intermittently not engaging.
    - locking indicator on drivers door not changing colour when locked. also intermittent.
    - auto function of lhr window not working up or down.
    - lh heated mirror appeared to be not working.

they have ordered a new indicator stalk, new control module for central locking, new regulator for lhr window.
they said the mirror is heating up.
interesting that the manual states the heated mirrors will only work below a certain temperature. does anyone know if they can be tested manually?? or are they telling fibs? did not wanna come across as a smart you know what so wanna get my info straight before asking them how they tested the mirrors.

They did everything else you had wrong properly so why do you doubt the dealer on the mirror check?

And yes the dealer can check the mirror heating operation anytime and so can anyone with vagcom/vcds.

Test it yourself before it goes back to get those modules replaced.

thats why i'm asking if it can be tested with vagcom... dont know myself so had to ask.
dont get me wrong... am happy that they checked what i wanted and are going to change some things...
can be a problem when you get intermittent faults... never seem to show up when you put it in to be checked...

Do you know what temp it's supposed to work below?

The other night, it was about 10 degrees and they cleared up nicely (and quickly) when turned on..

VCDS can give you some information.

e.g. for the drivers door module (42), measuring block 008,3 shows if the heater is active or not.

There is also an adaptation in central convienience (I think) that sets the turn on time for the demister and mirror heater. It defaults to 10 minutes but I changed mine to 20 minutes.

There is no measuring block for the current draw for the mirror heater unfortunatley.

I have found that if my mirrors fog up, turning on the heater clears them in under 30 seconds.

you mean the rear window demister ???
if so i would like to change mine also... i dont feel it is on long enough to demist the window.

dont quote me... but thought it was meant to come on under 5 degrees.
the jetta might be different as it has the selectable position on the switch.
              ie... heater, left, off, right

our new beetle has the heater position in the same spot as off....
ie left, heater & off, right. the manual for this says it will come on under 5 degrees. (this is where i assumed it would be the same for the jetta.)

I know my Jetta manual says mirror heating works if it's below 20 degrees! Not exactly icey. Max heat in first 2 minutes then it decides on heating based on ambient temp which makes sense.

For what it's worth, every so often I'll scan for faults with my vagcom whilst doing something else and I always get a fault with the L side mirror. Forget exactly, it's like an intermittent heat signal fault or something similiar. Clear it and it returns. Never noticed a problem with it heating but keeping an eye on it.

well it was a chilly 4 degrees this morning so my mirrors were nice and frosty.
both seem to be working now. defrosting took about the same time on both sides.

had my car in to be fixed yesterday.
they replaced my lhr window lift mechanism and this has now fixed the auto function on that window.
they replaced my central locking module and so far the indicating lights are working correctly... will have to wait for another very cold morning to really test it out.
they replaced the indicator stalk to fix the cruise control not engaging ... so far it has worked every time i have tried to use it.

Excellent news. Hopefully all those problems will now be sorted and it's the last you need to worry about them.
