  • Mk V buyers guide? (~$20k) What to inspect, what breaks? Near 100K. Risks? NRMA insp?

    Hi,
I asked a question about buying a used Mk V and was advised to wait for a lower-km model.
Would you recommend avoiding all cars near 100k because of expensive replacement parts costs? Is the 100k service going to be expensive on a TDI?

This particular car is almost 100k but has leather and 1 owner and FSH.

It's a VW used dept. dealer trade-in, with 3mths left of warranty.

It's seemingly an otherwise stock MY07, '06 Jetta TDI DSG. There is another one in Perth (actually a 07 MY07) but with transport etc it would cost me ~5k more and would only have 10k less mileage.

should I get an independent (Motorpoint) inspection or a VW specialist inspection? Any specialists you can recommend who can get to Penrith?

    Pleeeeze.... any feedback gratefully appreciated!
    Thanks for your feedback!

If it's being sold by a VW dealership, get an independant inspection by a VW specialist. They'll know exactly what to look for in a car that old and they'll hopefully be upfront and honest about anything that could be wrong with it.

    Good luck

Can anyone recommend a specialist who can visit Penrith, where the dealer is located? Has anyone done this in Sydney?

I have the car until tomorrow, so is there any VW specialist available for a quick booking/check tomorrow?

I am northside but anywhere north/northwest/west is good.

i would not know exactly what to look for, but if it's any consolation,
i have an 05 golf 1.9 TDI with almost 120,000 km on it, and it's still running like a clock.

the 120km service is the big expense one. figure about $1600 if you get a VW dealer to do it.

        Jason.

          Thanks, Jason.

There's some great feedback here. The figure I've been quoted for the TDI 2.0 + DSG service at 120k is 1859-2200ish.

If they want a sale surely they would let you take it to an independant workshop ?

What about purchasing an extended warranty or trying to get that aspart of the deal if you have concerns?

I think this wouldn't be a problem; I was very kindly lent the car overnight to take for a test.

I am seeking an independent workshop!

Will definitely want to do that!

Thanks and I can report I'll be visiting a specialist at Girraween, for a quick check.

Any further coaching tips are appreciated for neogitating the deal.
I think a Friday afternoon meeting, with cash or bank cheque + cash topup is the best form of negotiation.

I'm a bit wary of taking it all as cash or a bank cheque (except it can be made out to the dealer).

Where can I find other sources of recent sale prices for TDIs?
Thanks for all of your tips!

PS. In case I didn't specify, I have the hardcopy of the VWA-Allianz dealer quote and would ideally offer $17k cash for the car + VWA warranty policy, given Mk V TDIs have sold for $17k with a warranty AND a major timing belt service already done at around this mileage.

                    Cheers,
                    Bizi
