  • VW Replacement Key/FOB

    Hi All,

I am writing this topic so you don't make the same mistakes I made when getting a replacement key for my MK5 Golf.

I purchased a key with an uncut blade from the UK off ebay ($80), thinking that all I had to do was get it cut and programmed by the dealer. How wrong I was! Before buying the key,I made sure the part numbers were the same.

For those that don't know the key has two parts - The transmitter and the switchblade/transponder. I got the key cut by a locksmith ($40) and programmed the transmitter with instructions I found on the internet. The only thing left to do was get the dealer to program the transponder to my car’s immobiliser. Turns out the transponders are country specific and they couldn't program it. Yet they still charged me $88 anyway.

So I was already $208 out of pocket without a working key and thinking that I had to dish out $450 on top of the money I had already spent.

I enquired at the parts desk at my VW dealer and they told me you can buy the transmitter (about $190) and the switchblade/transponder separately (about $170). I only purchased the later part as I already had a working transimitter and it arrived at the dealer one week later pre-cut. I had to do book the car in to get the transponder programmed again for an additional $88.

So all up it cost me $466.

So here's how to save yourself some money:

    Buy a FOB from eBay
    - Make sure the frequency matches your car and has the same number of pushbuttons. From this FOB, you only require the transmitter half.
Buyer the switchblade/transponder ($170) from the Dealer
    - You will need to provide the dealer with the VIN number so that they can cut the switchblade for your car.
Get the Dealer to program your transponder and transponder ($60-$88
    - Some dealers do it cheaper than mine.

Otherwise just go to the dealer and save yourself the time and effort.

If you want more info on the transmitter and switchblade/transponder check out this link. I found it pretty helpful.

i got two replacement key fobs (no internals, just the cases and a blank blade) on ebay (new) for a total of $50 delivered,
and just swapped the internals of mine over (transponder chip included) used my existing key blades too.

no problems at all. they both work great, and look like new again.
the reason i bought new cases was that the old ones were very scruffy looking.

obviously this will only work if you don't actually need a new / extra key.
if you just want to tidy up your existing ones, this is the cheapest solution.

Still cheaper than replacing a computer from what I've heard

Good to know this info though for any modern VW owner its a necessity.

Aprox $500 (if you include the fee for programming it)

Holy crap! No wonder people try the eBay alternative first!

I've still got the spare key from my last Golf. I guess with a new blade and some programming it should work?

If the transponder type is the same you can.

Matching up the transporder is the hard part. I couldn't seem to find the part number for it anyway let alone an alternate supplier.

Given both my golf were the same type and year model I should be pretty safe.

I'll have to find out at work what we're charging to program them.

It usually takes me around 15mins to set up the VAS5052 online, and program a pair of keys. Going off the labour rate alone, it works out to be about $50.

If you Golf owners think you've got it tough with the price of keys, spare a thought for the B6 Passat owners! I recall one lady requiring 2 complete transponder keys (one failed, and the other went missing), and an emergency key. A few weeks before that, she left one of the transponders in the boot sill, and closed the boot. One broken window later...

Hey mate. I'm super confused about the whole key replacement thing. I just bought a MKIV with only 1 key and remote unit. Can i buy a key/keyless fob off ebay that suits mkIV golfs, get the key cut by a local locksmith and then programmed at my next service?

                            thanks

                            Seb

Can you use a 2006 Poli GTi fob and get a new key cut, then retrofit it for a 2006 Golf GTi? They're physically the same...
