  • Mark V Golf Tow Bar

    Hey Guys,

Dumb question time now. Been thinking about getting a tow bar fitted to the Golf. Really only need it to put a bike rack - not for towing (which is why i'd probably not get the wiring loom fitted).

What i would like to know is on the Mark V, where does the tongue of the tow bar protrude? There doesn't seem to be a port plug in the rear bumper bar where it would come through. Does it come from beneath the vehicle or do they have to cut a hole through my new bumper? Not something i really want to do... To me, the car appears too low for the tow bar tongue to come from underneath...

    Any thoughts from you guys?

    Cheers,
    Mark

      Thanks for that Tim.

Damn i was hoping that this wouldn't be the case. May mean i have to go to roof racks but not keen on the cost factor.

according to the thread that the pics come from i think it cost around $1400 and cos the electrical plug was fitted so low it ended up getting damaged on a steep driveway

well i've been quoted $180 for a hayman reece (aftermarket) tow bar fitted - without the wiring loom - which, from what i'm told, is the most expensive part of the package. I'll have no use for the plug as i dont tow trailers or anything - hence wont need the indicator and brake lights. Wish there was another option.

Does the genuine VW tow pack come from under the rear bumper, or does that need to be punched through the plastic also?

You can also get the kind of light plug which lives inside the boot and which you put throught the boot opening if you do need lights etc for the trailer. This system means you dont need to cut the car.

Don't put a hole through the back bumper then you are left with it when evber you want to take it off. Also ask DUBBING he had a towbar on his vr6 that was already low (suspension I mean) it hugged the back bumper fairly nicely, till he took it off lol.

The new Golfs have a Can-bus system which has to be connected to the computer. It doesn't have a seperate wire to each light.

i'm not so concerned about the plug, moreso the bar itself. Aesthetically, not so keen on it being cut through my new rear bumper.

Will call the dealership and see what they have to say on positioning and revert back...

                      tow bar

1 dealerships do not fit tow bars without fitting the wiring harnes due to liability reasons

2 the tongue is removeable and yes the bumper must be chopped but most the time neat ,the bumper bar gets removed and the bumperbar support bar get removed and replaced with one that has a tow bar and does not protrude underneith but protrudes outward but as i said can be removed and vw offer a cover so neater than any old bumperbar place but im sure its all in the pack it isnt cheap.....
