Is there much of a difference turning off ESP with the R32 AWD - and does it give more of a performance/sports gain OFF?

Mainly to the front.
Varies with wheel slip, throttle input yaw etc.

It stops wheel spin a bit on. Off you can take off a bit quicker, or it feels that way keeping wheels scrabbling, BUT a few post Ive read around the net guys have crashed with it off probably trying too hard.
Ive tried it on and off on some tight twisties with no change I could feel other than when on and the rear broke away it made thumping noises as the brake modulated. That was also at a speed that was too fast for proper smooth line thru the corner.
Driven sensibly and on the correct line I doubt you will feel it on other than when you may of crashed off the road with it off. (R32 here, front drive GTI may have diff traits)

The 4Motion system works as per your first example - generally FWD, with torque channeled to the rear wheels if slippage is detected. An upgraded Haldex controller can hook up the rear wheels faster and allow more torque to be transferred, which gives more neutral handling in the twisty bits while still keeping things efficient when you're going in a straight line and not wanting for grip.

I'd turn ESP off on the track, but on public roads, you should have no need to switch it off.

Yes that is normally correct, however if you switch it off engage launch control and then while engaged you can switch it back on.

But you are correct, you can't first engage launch control without it switched off.

Also an upgraded Haldex controller can assist in faster launches simply by switching to rear bias before launch. Hell the fronts are going to slip anyway, you're better off switching to the rear bias straight away instead of wating for the 4motion system to detect significant front end slip and switching the the rear later which delays optimum traction and acceleration off the line.

Yes, but as yet i have not done a comparison of launch differences. Depends on the severity of the ESP cutting in.

No, you can switch it off when doing normal driving - but as its a good safty feature i dont see why i would turn it off while on public roads
